iDrive 9 - Android Auto or Apple Carplay?

Hi,

Just joined the forum.

Based in the UK, I have on order an X1 xDrive23i M Sport due to be built mid November (wk 47). I have been told it will come with iDrive 9. I know iDrive 9 is based on the Android Automotive operating system (as opposed to Linux of iD8) and while Android Auto and Apple Carplay are just apps, I can't help but wonder if using Android Auto would be more compatible with the features of the underlying operating system?

I am about to change my mobile phone and while I was considering the new Apple 15 out next month (hopefully), I'd equally be happy with the latest Samsung android phone. So, has anyone identified any benefit of using Android Auto over Apple Carplay (or vice versa) on iD9?

Grateful for any help?

I’d stick with the Apple as id9 seems to work very well with it, more issues reported with Android phones. I’ll be getting the 15 Pro sounds like a big step up esp in the camera

Many thanks for the responses. I did have a read through the existing threads before posting but grateful for the reminder. I have noted that there are numerous buggy issues with iD9 but I hope BMW will address many of them over the coming months.

I came to the same conclusion that based on the posts, Apple seems more stable than Android at the moment but presumably (hopefully), that will be fixed. That still leaves the question of whether Android Auto or Apply Carplay will work better (have greater functionality) with iD9 once the bugs are better controlled? In theory, there should be no advantage of one over the other. I think I will wait until the Apple 15 is released and then review again. Grateful for any other comments.

When I picked my car up on 3rd July it was the first car the salesman had seen with IDrive9 and he couldn't get AA to work even with his own phone.

I had to spend my hard earned cash on a more up to date Samsung phone which was a waste of money it still doesn't work.

Went to local dealer and a lady there got it working after 90 mins of trying but it was short lived, Gave up!.

CarPlay might be okay, don't know.

The hype about Android on IDrive9 is just that it gives YOU nothing extra.
Android is like Lego, Most of the Bricks are Linux, Google have just some of theirs in there and even most of those are Big Bricks made with Linux Little Bricks.
On both IDrive8 and IDrive9 there is a Menu entitled "OpenSource Declaration" this lists all the opensource Linux componenents for which BMW has a license to use they are basically the same with the addition of Android Opensource components in IDrive9, these in turn have an opensource declaration for all the Linux components they use.
The only reason BMW has changed it is to turn it into a "Cash Cow" Android is Linux wrapped in a bag by Google which is a clue to its purpose and it is free to BMW do you ever wonder why?. The screens you see are the old opensource components from linux unchanged from IDrive8 + some new bits, there is nothing there at present that could not be done with straight Linux. They have changed the head unit for IDrive9 but if they wanted could have made it compatible with IDrive8 without going to Android. The Hardware support is in Linux not Android.

Android-Auto requires Android on your phone not on your car, The interface on your car is just that it could be anything which talks the right language (via WiFi Direct). i.e.IDrive8 and my wife's Toyota but not IDrive9 at present or so it seems.
The Android stuff is to come.

Many thanks for the information.

If I understand correctly, PHEVs X1s were still ID8 in the UK up to a certain point ? Has this changed recently ?

I am currently expecting an EU built X1 with production week 49 which should be ID9 - as it's an PHEV (30e), I am not sure what idrive it will be in the end ...

I think it was stated somewhere officially that all '24 models would be receiving ID9.

My 2 cents, and seems to somewhat be backed up by the number of Android users having issues, is that Apple seems to work better for two possible reasons:

a) Apple has been supported by BMW for a much longer period of time.

b) Android as an OS could have issues because as an OS it is somewhat fragmented due to it being open source, and each manufacturer putting their own packaging on it. Some of this could contribute to compatibility problems where one phone model on a specific provider could work fine, but a minor change in code somewhere could untintentionally affect something.

Apple is a bit more uniform I think in this regard, but you sacrifice a lot of capability to customize the phone software to how you like it.

That being said, I just recently upgraded to the iPhone 15 Pro Max a few days ago, and on iDrive 8 at least, I'm happy to report that other than having to re-register my digital key, everything works fine. There are some minor changes to the CarPlay interface, but mainly just appearance.

Same my 15 Pro Max working seamlessly with id9 too. I haven’t bothered updating my digital key yet though as to be honest the features are not important to me…

because CarPlay will only display Apple Maps on the screen behind the steering wheel.

if you want Google Maps on that screen, you'll have to get Android phones.
