With the greatest respect, I somehow do not think so. Especially as we have just driven (Tested for 100 miles) and purchased a Mercedes Benz EQB 300 4MATIC AMG Line Premium EV.

Haha, fair. It just reminds me a bit of a Hyundai Kona-e, the way it has buttons for the gearbox, haha. Don't know if I like it yet.

Does anyone know if the DCT is a brand new trans or an updated one from an existing vehicle? Who makes it? I've got experience with DCT's and just want to know more about this one.

This is from the press release, sounds like it's updated.

"The 2-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine has been revised for 2023. The new engine incorporates a Miller combustion cycle, as well as a new dual (direct and port) injection system and a revised combustion chamber geometry. The engine now makes 241 hp between 4,500-6,500 rpm, and torque has increased to a substantial 295 lb-ft between 1,500-4,000 rpm. The engine is mated exclusively to a new 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Together, they send the X1 xDrive28i from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.

The latest generation of the DCT now features fully electric actuation, a widened gear ratio spread and greater internal efficiency. This advanced transmission also now tailors shift strategy to the route topography and enables coasting in all drive modes except for Sport Mode when the gear selector is in position ‘S’.

The 7-speed DCT provides remarkably quick and smooth gear changes. It combines two sub-transmissions within a single housing, enabling it to pre-select the next gear prior to each gear change. The transmission automatically shifts into Park when the engine is switched off, and sensors can detect when the vehicle is parked on a slope and automatically engage the parking brake."

McTricky - interesting comment given extensive and widespread use by many mfgrs (Audi, Corvette, BMW, etc), most with much more power in front of the DCT than one sees in the X1. Though I cannot comment directly on them as I have concentrated on manual vehicles in the performance category.

DCT is great, quick and efficient and car manufacturers need that more than ever. I’ve used the Audi equivalent years ago and it was great see no reason BMW isn’t the same.

Manuals have their place but not in everyday cars these days. It’s US seems to be moving away from Autos and towards manuals but in Europe it’s the other way. For years we have been predominantly manual but few cars are manual and for most things that’s for the better.

That is definitely not the trend in the US. Automatics are the overwhelming majority here, and a manual is basically an anti-theft device at this point since not too many people know how to drive one. If a manual option was available, I probably would've gotten an M240i instead of the X1, practicality be damned.

For most folks not having ever driven a manual and being accustomed to "slushboxes", driving a DCT is frustrating and often report the car as having an issue when experiencing the lag then surge of clutch engagement when starting from a stop along with the clunkiness of a 1-2 downshift or upshift when coming almost a stop then accelerating. It can be alarming even when one understands how it is working. Not really good for around town stop-n-go driving or traffic crawling, likewise with a manual, IMO. It does sound like BMW has taken steps with the programming to help mitigate some of this.

I think the DCT's being utilized in mass-market "sporty" daily-driver vehicles drive much different than those in high performance sports cars due to more robust build and aggressive programming. I'm hoping BMW has focused somewhat on that.

B48 direct injection

Not trying to stir the pot about GDi in general, but wondering if anyone can speak to improvements relative to intake valve carbonizing on improvements to this variant. I've read somewhere that BMW has addressed this with some sort of system. I have a catch can on my Elantra and I've seen the results when emptying. Discuss.

DCT maintenance cost vs wrenching

I have a little experience having owned both wet and dry clutch DCTs. Not saying I'm an expert, but with my VW DSG, it's a very complicated process to change fluid involving leveling of the car for initial fill and software to get correct fill and calibration. Takes two people after to drive and run the software with a laptop to calibrate. I have an Elantra with dry clutch that AFIK does not require much of anything. The new X1 is wet so I'd imagine is similarly involved as the VAG. Let's discuss for anyone that likes to turn a wrench.

Doesn't this new X1 use an updated B48 with direct and port fuel injection like the updated B58?

That was a question I asked I think on another post (maybe mine). Is there an injector in the intake tract to wash pre-cylinder intake.

Regarding DCT vs X1 automatic by aisin.

I had X1 and I have vw with DSG DQ500. In regular situations like driving kids somewhere or driving to the shop mall, both auto and dsg deliver the same experience. Bmw's aisin had several cool features and 8 speeds, which I liked. I believe, DCT by BMW will be at least not worth then VWs product.

F48/49 never had a zf automatic. Its opted with: 8-speed automatic Aisin AWF8F35; 7-speed DCT Getrag 7DCT300.

people say : 7-speed getrag was not that great.
In my taste - ZF is more refined comparing to Aisin.
