30e MSport plug in hybrid ordered - some questions

Hi all,

Based in the UK and put an order in the other day for a plug in hybrid 30e MSport and added the Tech Plus pack and sun protection glass. This will be my 3rd BM and I’ll be trading my lovely 128ti after 3 very happy years with it.

I’ve had a good read through the posts on the forum and also read a few reviews online and have a couple of questions please. I couldn’t find a hybrid to try anywhere in the North East but did have a nice hour and a half in an iX1 on various roads. I appreciate the iX1 will be quite different but it was the only one I could try

Autocar criticised the gearbox in the petrol and diesel X1 as clunky and ponderous in their review and quoted a 6 speed gearbox. What do 30e owners think, is it clunky/ponderous. Is it 6speed, I thought it was 7?

As I’ve read on the forum and was told by the salesman, BMW no longer supply a 3 pin socket Granny charger with the car. I’ll thinking about using the Masterplug Home EV charger from Halfords or Amazon. Anyone using this or can recommend an alternative.

Is the correct connection to the car a mode 2 plug?

Do the paddleshifts also operate as I’m used to in changing gears on acceleration when the petrol engine take over? I hate revving the nuts of an engine to the red line and normally manually change up on an overtake.

In the iX1 the boost function was just a slight pull on the paddle. Does the boost on the hybrid need a longer pull or is it the same?

Sorry for so many question, I’m sure there will be more!

I have the 30e and do not find it ponderous and it is a 7 speed, the paddleshifters work in the same was as the ICE vehicles. I haven’t tried the boost function as the cars 322 hp is plenty with just a quick press on the accelerator. The Granny cable is no longer free but if you look on eBay you should be able to find a BMW one.

Don't worry about the powertrain.
In whichever traction (ice/electric/both) mode you are in, it's got lots of instant power and torque.
Its quite remarkable!

The boost works as you say, but it's very seldom needed, as the car pulls like a train.

No idea on charging, as we've got a Home charger (7.4kw).
Not charged the X1 in the wild as we just use 'maintain battery' till we get home or let satnav work it out.

We just use the same lead (type 2) as my Taycan and most other new EVs.
Remember its AC charging up to 7.4kw with a 14.2kw/h battery.
So potentially fully charged in 2 hours.

The ultra fast DC chargers you see in the wild (usually tethered) are not relevant for the hybrids.

Enjoy it. You will love it!

I have a 30e M Sport and as others have said there is no lag. It has instant acceleration, is fast when needed and economical. A joy to drive. I have the paddles but have to say never feel need to use them. I keep the car in its default settings and, for me anyway, it drives perfectly. I tried the boost once and you need to hold it until a 10 second counter comes up on the instrument panel and then press the accelerator during that time. It does seem to add an extra bit of oomph to the acceleration but in normal driving really not needed.

Pity that BMW are no longer including the granny charger as standard though I have a wall charger which fully charges the car in about 2 hours. Does seem a bit remiss of them bearing in mind the car is meant to be driven primarily on electric.

My advice is just drive the car and enjoy😀.

Thanks all, I also read that the car works well between engine and battery if you program the destination into the satnav. Stupid question but can the voice instructions be turned off so the media can be played

Can anyone recommend a boot liner for the 30e, the floor only type, not the complete boot area?

When using the Nav the car determines when to use the Battery/ICE. I usually set my home as the destination and add a stop as the place we are going then there is always some battery available for return trip.
As for the voice instruction yes it can be turned off.

Just picked up my 30e (9 month wait) and two charging cables came with the car - one for standard UK 3 pin plug and a standard plug electric charge cable.
Depending on your current car a hybrid always feels quick but I would say the steering is lighter than other BMWs I have had.

Agreed, steering is very light, my wife would prefer more feel and firmer steering, shame BMW doesn’t let you choose that whilst in personal.

The iX1 I tested had very light steering and I mentioned that to the sales guy who put it in sport mode which weighted it up a bit. I asked if that could be configured in an individual setting and he told me it could. Turns out he was speaking a load of twaddle, as they do, when he told be this!
