Boost Mode

I apologize if this has already been covered, I did not find it when searching. Does anyone have any good understanding of what the boost mode really does?

Engaged by holding down the downshift paddle kicks off a countdown from 10. Within that 10 seconds you need to go foot to the floor to trigger the boost mode.

But I’m really not feeling much of a difference compared to just going normal throttle. Anyone have any details on what this actually does? I assume it’s an over boost function.

A bit more info from the manual. But still not really explaining what it’s doing just how to use it. Other than “The sport boost function is used for maximum acceleration”.

Nothing specific is ever listed even in BMW press material to say if any extra power is given even and it must change for each model derivative.

I think it’s more a gimmick personally, shape the throttle / gear changes as if you are in sport without changing the mode is really all it seems to be doing. Does it rally not give you max power if you don’t do this, nah I don’t thing so.

On the iX1, boost mode gives you an extra 40 BHP and temporarily changes you into sport mode.

On the ICE models, boost mode is supposed to give you quick access to Sport Mode and triggers a downshift to allow for quicker acceleration in order to overtake.

I’ve never tried boost mode in an X1, but on the iX1 it is significantly noticeable (and a lot of fun!)

It is almost a short cut so the car is then set to its most aggressive setting, for 10 seconds. It does feel like sport mode but at WOT.

I’ve played around with the feature a bit. I still can’t work out what it actually does lol. In efficient mode sitting on 110km/h on the freeway I wanted to pass a couple of d.h’s. It does very little. The car didn’t want to kick down accelerated very slowly vs my expectations. With the car in sports mode and the gearbox in sport mode doing 80km/h I turned it on and there was a significant torque boost with barely increasing the throttle. It felt like it just wanted to take off which was surprising for such a little 4cyl. So it could be a torque remap of the ecu which would certainly assist with overtaking. Just to put into perspective my car or wife’s car I should say is the xdrive20i.

I was told that there is a small electric motor and the hybrid battery delivers a few extra HP through the gearbox for a few seconds - I don’t know if that is factually correct or not but the boost button definitely does give a bit of a boost.

I guess if you have a hybrid then that would be the case. Mine is the petrol only version that only has the stop/start battery.

Agreed. Deinfirly no electric boost in the M35 either which is non hybrid.

Yeah from what I gather it kicks everything into the sportiest of modes for that time but it does seem very slow to do that.

I don’t know how it is in the USA, but all petrol/diesel engines, except the 18i/d variants and the M35i, have a mild hybrid battery that provides an additional 19HP.

The plug in hybrids get 109 or 177 additional HP (25e and 30e, respectively).

Unlike the M35 (and I’m assuming the other ICE models), you do not need to press the boost button for at least one second for it to activate. On the iX1 it’s instantaneous, which makes me think that the boost mode on ICE vehicles is also another way of performing a kick down where the car also drops a gear in addition to switching to the sportiest setting

I’m in Australia. There are no hybrid engines and no diesel engines for the x1 here that I am aware of.
