I normally can figure things out about cars, but this one has me stumped. I bought my very first BMW last week. The X1 was pretty much everything that I was hoping for. But this thing I can't figure out after doing online search and reading the owner's manual.

The X1's screen and stereo turn on when door is opened. it is driving me nuts! Is this something that can be disabled?

A big thank you to anybody who can help me figure this out.

The stereo has no "off" switch. All you can do is mute it by pressing down on the volumn control.

Assuming you have the key with you, the screen comes on to welcome you, all friendly like. Be nice to it. I cussed at the car once and it told me to "Watch My Tone".

It can't be disabled. You need to mute the stereo when you turn the car off, before you open the door.

You can actually turn the iDrive off after the car is off by holding down the console volume knob for 2-3 seconds.

I didn't clarify what I was trying to say. I leave the X1 unlocked in my garage. (the key fobs are on the other side of the house) I walk into the garage a few hours later, open the door and get inside, the stereo and display screens turn on. I get the stuff that I need(a jacket or something like that) and exit the X1. Close the door. The stereo continues to play for a while before turning off.

If I do that too many times, it will probably drain the battery unnecessarily which is what I'm trying to avoid.

Is there anyway to prevent that for the above scenario?

The car electronics will turn off a few seconds after you lock the car. The only possible solution I can think of is if you have the unlock on approach feature toggled on and you bring your key with you when you go to get something out of the car. When you walk away with the key it will lock and shut everything off.

maybe this "problem" will go away for me in a week or two.

I've been going into the garage at random times to admire my beautiful new X1. I open the door and get int... then the stereo comes on. at 4am two nights ago, I woke up to go to the bathroom and then found myself wondering into the garage. Turned on all the lights and just stared at it... then I got sleep so somehow I opened the door and sat in the driver's seat. Then the stereo started playing some random crappy song on SiriusXM. the music was so annoying, I got out of the car and went back to bed upstairs.

surely I won't be doing that after the newness wears off sooner or later.

Edit: nevermind, I get what you said about “it” going away lol.

It won’t go away, the car is programmed to have the electronics on for a certain amount of time if a door is open and remains unlocked. It will turn off either by locking the car, or after the time limit has passed.

My X3 does this and I have had it for 4.5 years, it has never caused a battery problem.

speaking of the X3...

this morning, one of my neighbors walked up to my driveway and congratulated me on my new car. He said "hey, Nicky, I see you finally bought a BMW X3! Now you and I are X3 buddies!" (he bought his X3 a couple of years ago)

(until five minutes later when he realized that mine was actually the X1)

Just lock the vehicle...everything will shut off. I'll never understand what the big deal is about locking/not locking the vehicle whilst in the garage. Lock vehicle...everything shuts off...no annoying Siriusxm playing at 4a

Personally, I don't like to lock the car in my garage. But if I go into the car to get something out of it and everything comes on, I just reach in and hold down the volume button to shut it off.
