Roadside warning triangle storage in liftgate

In case anyone is wondering what the empty slot is for inside the liftgate door, it's for storage of a warning triangle. It's required in many countries (but not USA) so it was omitted in USA models (but the slot remains.

I had one in my USA 2014 X1 because we took delivery in Munich. If I'd have thought of it I should have removed it before I sold it! I currently have one in my 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman S. I just tested it in the U11 and it fits perfectly.

In case anyone is interested, here's the part number 71606770487

Possible sources:

Bimmerworld
BMW of South Atlanta
Turner Motorsport

I went ahead and ordered this one from Amazon as the case dimensions are close to the form and fit as the BMW/MINI version. If not, I'll just keep it handy in the boot/trunk of the MINI and use the MINI one in the X1.

Yup! We saved our Warning Triangle and First Aid Kit from our 2011 328xi Wagon, which we picked up in Munich at the BMW Welt. We’re glad that we did, as we now have both in our 2023 X1.

Yes (at least that one). I'm going to try a different version and if not, I'll just keep one of them and leave it loose in the MINI. I have donated the one that was in the MINI to the X1.
