Looking for X1 engine break-in opinions
The manual says the following about the break-in period:
Engine, transmission, and axle drive Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 km Do not exceed the maximum engine and road speed: ▷ For gasoline engine 4,500 rpm and 100 mph/160 km/h. Avoid full throttle or kickdown under all circumstances. From 1,200 miles/2,000 km The engine and vehicle speed can gradually be increased It also says not to use the launch control which I'm not sure what that is. Is it the "boost" feature?? I've always taken it really easy on my new vehicles for at least the first 500-1000kms which means I don't "floor it" or drive aggressively. I don't know if any of it really matters in the long run. We plan to keep our X1 for at least 6-7 years so I'm driving it pretty easy right now. What do you normally do? Grip it and rip it? or baby it for a while? |

The boost feature is mainly used for quicker acceleration to execute passing maneuvers or more quickly accerating while already in motion. For breaking in, I typically follow the manufacturer’s recommendation as much as I can. They’re the ones providing the warranty, and now many cars have a “black box” that can store data for unusual parameters or events in the programming that both BMW and the dealer can see. As this car is my primary car, I see no reason to abuse it while in warranty, just in case. That being said, there was a couple times the past month where I unintentionally went past 4500 rpm’s while merging on the freeway, but I don’t think I’d get dinged by BMW for that. There are some guys out there who swear by going balls to the wall from the start, but they’re typically going to use their cars for motorsports or racing.

Not in Efficient mode where a power meter is shown instead, nor in Expressive, Relax or Digital Art modes where is does not show either the rev counter or the power meter

You can also change the instrument display layout for any mode using the gear icon on the steering wheel to change the display.
