Music library setup help

Hi

Just looking for a bit of help on the best way of getting music library into the car?
I have searched but can't find anything.

Its the wife's car and she does not use any streaming services (Spotify etc).
Her phone memory is also nearly full (photos / videos).

So I was looking to store or upload using USB if possible.
Any help on doing this (or any alternative method) please.

Thanks

I have a 16GB miniature memory stick plugged into one of the USB C ports with 1000's of tracks saved to it and it works a treat - album, artist, song track (and if available, artwork) all display perfectly - you can shuffle play, play albums or by artist etc - all the things you can do on any other music player app.

My X1 in on ID8 (so I assume ID9 will be just the same in behaviour), and as soon as I plugged in the USB stick, it detected it - I didn't have to do anything to set it up. You can control the memory stick via the steering wheel controls, or the centre touchscreen or the dedicated buttons on the centre console.

This is helpful as I have been looking for a solution for this. Previous car was an X3 which had a hard-drive and easy to upload music via USB and there when needed. Just wondering what make of memory stick you used? Thanks.

The trick to finding your way around the music in a SD card is to use the search option. That'll let you navigate the folders and let you set a folder with a lot of other subfolders as the source. It can then play on order or you can set it to shuffle.

I mention this because there is a post somewhere in this forum that says you can't have subfolders . That's inaccurate

Thanks for the replies.....

Which USB port do you use (and does it matter)?
I seem to remember on my M2 that music player was from a specific port.

And are there any known limitations for the USB memory size?

Not sure about limits - I have a dual slot Sd and micro SD reader, along with a USB C right angle adapter, plugged in with a 64 gig micro SD. Works fine

As far as I can tell it can read data through either of the USB-C ports, I’ve used either for recording and storing my Drive Recorder footage. I don’t use USB for music though since I just use Apple Music.

I am using this one:
https://www.samsung.com/us/computing...-muf-256da-am/

Using the driver side usb-c port, and it's out of the way so you won't even notice it's there.

I use a SanDisk Cruzer 16GB - it's really compact.

Out of curiosity, I have tried all four ports and they all work. Not sure about the max memory size allowed; mine is only 16GB, but that size still has room for hundreds of tracks.

Works a treat. Small SanDisk purchased and music synced. The SanDisk is articulated with an "A" at one end and "C" at he other, meaning it's quite unobstrusive when plugged in. As has been said any USB C port works. On screen able to search Artist, Album or track. Thanks again for the advice and tips.

Has anyone worked out how to activate ‘Shuffle’ when using a USB with music files please? I’ve been looking for ages but can’t work it out. I’ve tried voice commands but no joy. I’m on ID9.
TIA

Much appreciated thank you. Took me a while to realise you have to click on the music/media widget thing to actually open the Music app.
Still getting used to having no drive controller.
Thanks again!

Does anyone else using a memory stick for music find it's very inconsistent for availability? Sometimes the car flat out won't recognize there's a stick plugged in until I do an idrive reset. Plugging in a different USB stick makes no difference in this situation.

Is there anything else on the drive? If not, try formatting one to FAT32 and reloading the files

Yes!

I started the thread initially and had loaded up a USB for my wife's X1
(out of interest, music only worked on the front USB ports and not the rears).

First time it worked great, then last time it wouldn't show albums and only a handful of artists - but all the tracks (a-z) which isn't much use.

I will see what happens next time I'm in it.

Nothing else, and it's FAT32.

Highly unlikely to be an issue with the transfer to the stick, and I'm not moving nearly 100 Gigs of music again either way.

Mine is ridiculously incosistent. Just now I was listening to music as I stopped to grab something from nearby cafe. Shut the car off,but kept pre-conditioning going, cause it was 4 degrees and snowing hard when I got back this morning. Came out and got back in the car with the music still playing. I hit the brake and button to drive off, car immediately pretends I wasn't listening to anything and dumps the USB audio.

At least I was able to immediately get back in the music library, I assumed it was going to pretend there was no stick inserted like it usually does when that happens. There's no rhyme or reason to it, it just plain sucks.

There's no "moving".... It's just reading the files. Mine works without issue. Sometimes I have to reselect the media but it's no big deal. I don't have the bmw app and always a "guest " in my own car.
