The confusing thing is that if I compare the options listed in a VIN decoder (between a X3 M40i and X1), the option code 2VF (Adaptiv M Suspension) appears on both cars.

That’s because BMW is attempting to mislead potential buyers. It is not by accident the wording is similar BUT SHOCKING THEY USE THE SAME CODES FOR ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SUSPENSIONS.
THAT IS JUST WRONG

My old 330e which had the adjustable adaptive was S2VFA whereas my iX1 lists S2VF. Perhaps the extra A is important? I’ve also seen SA2VF listed for other cars with proper adjustment.

The simple way to know that our cars don’t have electrically adjustable dampers (apart from reading what it actually says on the configuration) is to look at a parts diagram. There’s no wires going anywhere near our suspension components.
The Monroney sticker for my 2025 X2 M35i says “Adaptive M Suspension” which is not user adjustable (so does the ordering guide for the 2025 X2 - see included pic). Option code is 2VF.

My husband’s 2025 M340i has Adaptive M Suspension (the user adjustable version). It is also option code 2VF.

I guess the thing is that the suspension DOES adapt even if it is done mechanically rather than electronically. I just wish they would stick a different option code on it.

Try putting them both through a VIN decoder - something like https://www.mdecoder.com/ . When I did I discovered that there are variants of 2VF. See a couple of replies up.

I got the full option codes for both vehicles using the F12 browser “hack” on the My BMW Garage webpage.

I’d still be interested to see whether a VIN decoder gives fuller results. I think 2VF is only a partial code. For starters it should have an S at the start. But maybe they will both show the same.

I keep hearing/reading people say this. What does it means to have the suspension adapt mechanically vs electronically? That makes no sense to me. Isn’t the only way for a shock/strut to adjust its valving with an electronic servo (I.e. electronically?) How does something adjust mechanically?

If it senses a lot of movement (bumpy road) it softens up, whereas if it detects hardly any movement (smooth road) it hardens.

It uses a valve in each damper that reacts depending on the speed of the compression. When you hit a significant bump where the compression is fast the valve opens up softening the damping. On a smooth road, where the compression is more gradual, the valve is closed to stiffen the damping.

It actually works very well, I find.

I still say you should check to see if the transport pucks have been left in by mistake. I’ve heard stories of people driving their cars and finding them back-breaking.

I find the iX1 (on M Sport) very forgiving and comfortable. My previous car was a 330i M Sport and that was way firmer. Both on 18” non-RFT’s.
