We're already being nanny'd (sp?) like crazy, from just about every industry, including automotive. All because someone (not necessarily you Mr. Crabby) can't think for themselves and envariably get themselves in bad situations or worse, killed. It would be almost funny...wait...Fail Army? technology made me stupid...

I must have travelled to San Francisco at least 80 times in the last 20 years. I drive a LOT over there. However, thanks to navigation systems in cars, I have not used paper maps or learned the streets/highways over there since as early as 1999. I just followed the navigation system in the car or on the phone.

Was there back in November. Wanted to drive from my hotel south of the airport to a restaurant in downtown SF. I left my phone in my hotel room and the rental car did not have its own navigation system. I thought to myself "what's the worst that can happen, probably a couple of wrong turns, so what?"

I got hopelessly lost and asked some random stranger for direction for the first time in 20 years. To top it all off, the guy gave me wrong direction, so I had to ask a teenager working at a gas station convenience store. He looked at me like "dude, just use your phone?" (the same way I looked at senile senior citizens back when I was in high school)

BimmerCode for BMW and MINI 4.2 (13117) is ready to test on iOS.
What to Test:

Support for the following vehicles: X1 (U11), iX1 (U11 BEV), iX (I20), X7 LCI (G07), 7 Series (G70), i7 (G70 BEV), 2 Series Active Tourer (U06)

Please note that only the “Headunit“ and “Receiver Audio Module“ control units can be coded for these cars.
What does "...only the “Headunit“ and “Receiver Audio Module“ control units can be coded for these cars." mean? What type of features would that include?

Probably only things that can be directly controlled by the headunit, possibly stuff like: Auto Start/Stop disable, setting sport mode as the default mode, adding new colors to the ambient lighting, enabling different graphics to display when starting the car. But then again, I'm not sure since I have no idea what these modules actually contain as far as programming. Seems dead in the water for now though, as BMW is actively updating their software to make it harder for people to code their cars.

I don’t understand this lag on auto stop start, my 18diesel has no mild hybrid battery yet the stop start is instant with a feather touch of the peddle, even quicker than the current X3 I just handed back.

The lag isn’t so much with the auto start/stop. It’s with the throttle tuning in personal mode on the US 28i model. Sometimes you can mash the throttle and literally nothing happens. When in combination with the auto start stop feature sometimes it’s is even worse. That being said, as I stated in another post, after a trip to the dealer for the airbag recall my issues mysteriously have largely gotten better.

Curious about this because I just emailed Bimmercode regarding support for the U11 and they reply was:

"These models use additional security mechanisms which prohibit coding by any means other than the official BMW software. As of now, there is no known method to bypass these security mechanisms."

And when I asked if this would be bypassed in the future...

"We are still looking into this but it's hard to tell. If there is no known method to bypass those mechanisms, it will never be possible."

I don't yet have my car so I don't know first hand but I find it interesting that they are saying this now when earlier this year it seemed like some coding would be possible.

It’s because for some other models with iDrive 8, coding was possible but very limited. Now that cars are so connected, every aspect of the cars system can be monitored. Even some existing models have got software updates and no longer can code from what I’ve read. BMW can see almost everything you do to with car, even flash tunes can raise flags in the system when taken in for service, even if you flash it back to stock maps. There’s a built in flash counter on the modules that stores how many times the software has been written, and if it doesn’t match BMWs values it will flash the system.

Unless someone makes some ground breaking discovery, we’ll be stuck with the factory software for the foreseeable future.

Damn. Sad to hear but makes sense honestly.

It’s gone rather crazy, BMW can even see if you have had a car on a rolling road due to not GPS movement and a max speed as well and that then gets logged against the car.

a few days ago, I was on the BMWUSA website trying to configure a 2024 5-series sedan. I got to the last page with all the options and just left it there.

The very next morning, my BMW salesman called me.(the same one who sold me the X1 in April) He wanted to know if I needed any help deciding the options for my new 5-series sedan.

I was a little freaked out and annoyed. Although not really surprised. This is really getting out of hand because the lack of privacy. I politely told my salesman that (1) I was driving when he called and (2) I'll contact him when I'm good and ready and not a moment sooner.

Same thing happened to me last with with Hyatt. I was browsing their website for a Hyatt hotel in the Indianapolis area. There were 5 or 6 that I looked at around the city. I was about to complete the booking until I realized that I needed a live rep to use the points. I called the 800(toll-free number). The rep asked for my name and email address. She then said "do you want the king or two queen beds?" I replied "but I haven't even told you with city I wanted to book the room in???" She basically said that anything that I did while on Hyatt.com was logged and tracked... guess I won't be looking to book a Hyatt hotel in Pyongyang, Tehran or Vladivostok, unless I'm using VPN next time!

I have private browsing turned on in my browser for exactly those reasons.

Getting off topic now but you may want to add using a VPN as well if that's a concern.
