when it happened to me, my iPhone 14 Pro Max was in the wireless charging dock. when I noticed that the position was off, I picked it up and threw it on the dash(on that plastic mesh thing behind the screen). the map then became normal ago(both position and heading) I figured it was just the phone not getting the GPS signal.

However, I read most posts in this thread again... are you guys having to reset iDrive8 because the GPS position was forever stuck or lost?
While I initially thought it had to do with being in the dock, I now realize that it does not matter where my phone sits. It happens in the dock, in my pocket or on the seat next to me. BMW needs to address this issue as it it very frustrating.

so this problem freezes the maps or locks up the iDrive8 screen?(requiring a hard reset?) wow.... that sounds awful.

these days, cars are loaded with too many electronic gadgets which makes me sad... I prefer the old days when cars didn't even have bluetooth capability. Before I decided on the X1, I also test drove the Mercedes GLB. That demo was possessed.... The salesman wanted to show me how to control things by saying "Hey Mercedes"... but the system kept repeating "yes, what can I help y..... what can ... what can.. what can..." over and over again, until I pulled over to the side and the salesman turned off the car and restarted it... that was when I decided to give up my Mercedes fanboy status and ordered the BMW X1.... but now... I'm not so sure anymore.

No. What it does is throw the GPS in the iPhone off. Does not matter if you are using WAZE, Google apps or Apple maps. The GPS on the car itself is fine but any map apps on the iPhone go crazy.

I've found the X1 Voice control to be fairly receptive and I have an accent. Haven't tried the MBUX but based on what I've heard about it and experienced with X1, BMW seems to be doing a better job.

The GLB that I drove was weird... it didn't even care if I used the word "hey" at all... anytime me or the salesman said the word "Mercedes", it responded... which was super annoying.

I got Waze to work, but I haven't tried again. I'll have to try again tonight on my way home.

It is sad that the situation means there is no accurate location information for family members through life360.

take of video with another phone and show it to the BMW tech.... because I get the feeling that this issue does not happen 100% of the time? (or works fine when the tech test drives it)

Fail. Waze worked fine for 5 minutes, then the issue kicked in. And I actually deleted and re-paired my phone last nite too. This is really frustrating.

Happened to me again yesterday in downtown Portland, in a very inconvenient and somewhat dangerous spot. This is a pretty serious issue -- so many phone applications beyond Google Maps and Waze rely on GPS to properly work. Suggestions on how best to urgently bring this to BMW's attention?

So driving to work today, I tested out Apple Maps, Waze and Google Maps, but without putting in a destination. Only showing current position on the map screen. All 3 showed the car in the correct spot on the road.

Keep testing and let us know the results.
It is showing the correct location one time does not mean it will show the correct location all the time.

when the problem does occur, is BMW's own navigation maps affected at all? just wondering...

I assume nobody who is experiencing this problem has small pocket-size GPS jammers in the X1?(like the one in the pic below) I used to have a similar one bought from Amazon.com many years ago because I really did not want my lady friend to know where I was at all times. it had a very short range and only affected GPS signal reception within the car)

thanks!

The threads I've been reading seem to say the BMW navigation is fine, which leads me to believe:

In order of ease of fixing for the consumer;

A) Apples software has a bug that requires correction (software update)
B) BMW's software has a bug that requires correction (hopefully an OTA update)
C) BMW's hardware has a defect that requires replacement. (recall campaign and dealer visit)

I'm leaning toward it being a BMW problem, because CarPlay works fine in my other cars (although those are wired, so it's not definitive).

I have no issues with wireless CarPlay in my f32, but I also haven't updated to the latest update on iOS. I know apple recently did an update to address some CarPlay issues a couple months back, I'm wondering if that broke anything in specific circumstances (like interacting with iDrive 8). I also wonder if maybe BMW's GPS antenna is active while using CarPlay navigation and is interfering with the iPhone GPS positioning in some way?

since I got my iPhone 14 Pro Max back in early November, I used it in at least 6 or 7 different rental cars/SUVs/minivans. None had problems with wireless or wired CarPlay, Apple Maps or Google Maps. Off the top of my head, they included Kia Carnival minivan, Toyota 4Runner, GMC Yukon, Toyota Sienna minivan, BMW X3, Chrysler Pacifica and Audi A5.

I updated my phone to iOS 16.2 right after this started happening

I'm no software engineer, but this morning CarPlay was fine in my car without entering a destination, and just showing Apple/Google/Waze map on the iDrive screen and everything was fine; so I don't know if something happens when you actively engage guidance that would cause "interference".

At this point, it's anyone's guess until BMW acknowledges the issue and releases a statement

I'll just have to wait till Tuesday before I can see if I also have the issue.

seems to me that this is a clear safety issue... should be reported to NHTSA as well as FCC(since it relates to GPS)
