Front license plate

My current state enforces front license plates. So that the dealer doesn’t drill holes into the bumper, although I never cared for this in the past but I was considering the idea of mounting the front plate on the tow hook.

My questions and concerns for this are: would it get in the way of any of the front sensors in the new x1s? And would it look odd in a “suv” to have such a tuner look? What do y’all think?

I posted mine a while back, works fine and doesn’t interfere with any of the electronics. Got mine from Rho Plate, excellent build quality and great service. The sample photo on the site is my car.

Just make sure you get your salesperson to document that you don’t want the front plate mount drilled in. If I didn’t get mine to specifically note the PDI instructions to leave the mount off, their standard procedure is to drill and mount on all cars. I let them know as soon as my car left port in Germany.

Your location says "NJ" and I assume that's New Jersey? If you're in the Tri-State area, imagine parking on a busy street and the car in front of you backing into you while parallel parking. With a front license plate on the tow hook, there will probably be substantial damage. (as opposed to having just a regular front license plate plus a rubber bumper shock guard) Just my 2 cents.

That’s a pretty good point. More things to think about…

on the other hand, my X1 is registered in a state that does not have front license plates. sometimes it does scare me when I parallel park. without a front plate, when the car in front of me back into me, even at low speeds, my plate-less front bumper takes the hit.

PPF on the front bumper will not do much in such situations. I actually thought about sticking one of those bumper protectors(like on a NYC taxi) to the black part of my front bumper.... or I'll just never parallel park again.

All the Australia cars have below mentioned in mdecoder specifications:

S962: Deleted, Licence Plate Support Front

Any idea why would bmw delete plate support?

Thanks,

I bought these from eBay for my daughter’s X1 she picked up on Friday. No issues with sensors.

Personally, I prefer the symmetrical look of the centre style mounting to the offset mount.

Looks wise, it does look better to me that way. I just personally don't like having to drill into a bumper to mount a plate. It's a minor hangup of mine that doesn't really make any sense, but it is what it is. I just wish my state didn't require a front plate at all. For a UK or EU plate they're pretty long, so I think a tow hook mount might look kind of silly and would probably block some of the parking sensors anyway.

drilling a couple of holes in the bumper to install the front license plate isn't that bad if the car never leaves the state that requires front license plates.

the problem comes when the car is moved to a state that does NOT require front license plates. that's what happened to me when I moved several years ago.

I was so happy to be in a state that doesn't issue front license plates. When I re-registered my cars in that state, I took off the old license plates and holders... the area where the license plate was look awful. Beside the two holes, it was dirty and the paint had a slightly different shade than the rest of the front bumper. I ended up putting the plate holders back and drove like that.

the only car that looks good with the front number plate not in the center is the Alfa Romeo! but they don't really have any choice, do they?

I personally hate the triangular grill of the recent Alfas. Something about it just looks inconsistent with the styling of the rest of the car.

Mind sharing the link?

I like the Rho Plate, but think it's over priced for what it is.

Not sure about the eBay version, but the Rho Plate holder is so solid that if I kicked it I'd probably break a toe or something. I used to have a US Millworks one on my e90 which was amazing quality, and the Rho Plate holder is even better. I have zero regrets spending the money on it.

Agreed…

I paid $30. I used the same seller for my X7 and IX. Been very happy.

Thanks for sharing. Beats paying $100 for a mount

I do as well. For UK or European plates, how is that attached? I'm in the USA but want to transfer our EU front plate from my previous X1 (held on with 3M tape since 2015).

Is the UK/European plate holder bolted (drilled into) to the front bumper or to the grill?

The actual number plate on mine is attached by two screws (I would imagine 3M tape could be used instead of screws) to a mounting plate which itself is then attached to the front bumper. Not sure how the mounting plate is attached though I assume screws. I think this is standard for UK/EU cars.

Thanks.

If anyone in the UK or Europe (or anywhere) has the part number for that mounting plate please share.
