Anyone actually put their x1 into 'deep sleep mode'

since they won't be using their car for 10+ days?

Going on a trip next year and worried I may need a jump when I return ...

I'm a first time buyer to the brand

I would imagine that would be fine, but if it's an option you could always put it on charge whilst you're away. I've got a CTEK one I periodically use to refresh the battery.

I picked up my new X1 4 weeks ago. I only drove it for 1 of those 4 weeks.

When I was away from home, it remained inside the garage. Every couple of days, I used my phone and the BMW app to do a remote engine start for 10 minutes or so. I also used my garage door opener's app to open the garage door so the exhaust gas could be vented outside. I verified the door opening first, using the Ring camera in my garage. After that, I gave it about 5 minutes and then closed my garage door. It was done while I was 400 miles away from home. I imagine that it can be done anywhere my phone can access the internet. Although I don't know if BMW put some kind of geographic/country restriction to prevent engine start from another country? (but that can easily be bypassed if I log my phone into my office's VPN)

My X1 came with remote engine start. But I believe it can also be added on later as a subscription(check your X1's connected drive store)

Another solution is to simply disconnect the battery from the car.

But if you want, I can certainly help out. I'll come to Hawaii and spend a week or two. Everyday, I will drive your X1 around and make sure it's washed and polished. It's an obsession that I have... whenever I borrow a friend's car ore even rented a car, I always treated those cars like my own car and use the best cleaning/waxing products.

Yep, just returned from 10 days holiday in the Canary Islands and left the car in deep sleep mode (with anti-theft alarm activated) while we were away.

and on the first start-up back, it started with no problems?

If it will work on my car when I return, as I actually will be gone about 15 days, I will want to congratulate who ever invented this feature !

I never realised this was a problem.

In all my years of driving any time I’ve gone on holiday I’ve left my car in an airport carpark for up to three weeks and it has started no bother on return.

Usually when I travel to Japan I leave my car for 3-4 weeks and I’ve never had a problem starting it when I come home. I haven’t done that yet with the X1, but I assume it should be the same.

It won't be an issue. However, if you're concerned, get yourself a trickle charger and move on...worst case, if you choose not to get a trickle charger and your car is dead when you return, get a boost. Analysis paralysis...

thanks for the comments so far... so since many of you have had a bmw before, guess you knew about the 'deep sleep mode'. I haven't, so my inquiry was if anyone has *used* it in place.

This feature in the bmw is amazing and it seems that Lincoln also has a version of this deep sleep mode.

Since it will be parked at the airport, I won't have use of a trickle charger but I do have a power bank I bought about 3 years ago if I need to jump start the car.

I got one of those Battery Tender Junior chargers connected to a Mercedes in the garage. It's only driven every couple of months. The devices keeps the 100-amp battery inside the trunk happily topped up all the time.

With the new BMW X1 that I just got, can I use the same Battery Tender as well? BMW does sell their own battery charger/maintainer for $150 at the dealer's parts dept. Is it better to use that instead?

Amazing that we're talking about the possibility of a brand new car not starting after a few weeks parked up!

No worries about using your current tender. The BMW version is double the price and does exactly the same thing...save your dosh!

My cat also has his own deep sleep mode and it works amazingly well. I believe it's standard equipment on all cats?

As for the battery jump starter... I've been thinking about getting one as well. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Probably. I have that BMW charger and also an older 4 amp CTek charger. The BMW, Porsche and Merc branded chargers are all made by CTek.

If you have an M car with a Li-Ion battery then the official BMW charger is probably a wise purchase. Otherwise any CTek or NOCO "smart" charger with a similar specification will do, especially if it is just for trickle/maintenance charging.

Modern cars are stuffed full of computers that never normally go to sleep and are the source of "dark current" drains on the battery. All of these fancy "remote services" via the app on your phone come at a price. Hence the "deep sleep" mode options buried in the Vehicle Settings.

After exactly two months of having my x1, I finally went in the system settings to see how long it can hibernate without having a dead battery:

To a point, if you are going on holiday for 2-3 weeks then all will be absolutely fine. Going for longer things could be an issue. During the pandemic my old 5GT wasn’t touched for weeks and weeks at a time, zero issues with it. Eventually after over a year off. Minor use it did come up with a battery low message but a good run one day and it never reappeared.
