2023 X1 Engine Auto Stop/Start

Hi All,

I've been reviewing the 2023 X1 and like what I am seeing so far. A question I have concerns the engine auto stop/start feature that turns off the engine at stop lights and starts it again when you take your foot off the brake. Is there a way to switch this function off so that the engine runs all the time when driving? If so, is it a permanent toggle or do you need to switch off the function every time you start the engine. This is one fuel saving nanny that bugs the heck out of me and would like to rip it out completely.

It is a one time (per engine start) toggle - i have it added to the shortcuts so it is easier to access. I believe like most Beemers you can code it to remember the last setting if you are into coding.

My 2014 328 does not reset this setting every time you re-start. Not sure about the U11 X1 tho.... I haven't had mine for 24 hours yet.... however, it's much less intrusive than it was on my 328

I like the idea of a shortcut. Would that be considered a "widget" that is accessed from the touchscreen? (I think that's what BMW calls the shortcuts on the X1)

I would be curious to find out how the X1 does the toggle. I don't see a mechanical switch like they have on most cars so I assume it is through the settings menu.

it resets itself each time the engine is restarted..

to be honest, it's not that bad on the 2023 X1(U11). when I was test driving it, there was only a 0.5 to 1-second delay when I floored the the accelerator pedal once the traffic light turned from red to green. got used to it pretty quickly.

just put it in sport mode, that shuts it off. I know, 2 steps versus 1. At least it makes it even more fun to drive!

but doesn't sport mode revert back to comfort mode when the X1 is turned off and started again? (at least that's what it did when I test drove it)

thanks!

The 2nd Gen X1 loaner I had a few yrs ago still had the engine shut off in Sport Mode.

It does revert back, waiting for bimmercode to work on the u11 so I can set default mode to sport and then hopefully no clicks and no stop start. Will check next time I drive it, pretty sure the 3rd gen keeps it off in sport.

It's in one of the menus somewhere, I think drivetrain settings if I remember correctly. The shortcut menu you can add it to is not a widget, it's a menu you see when you swipe down from the top of the screen, similar to the Control Center on iPhones

I don't have high hopes yet, it appears the iDrive 8 talks to the mother-ship a lot and my eliminate coding or so I read somewhere

If you hear otherwise please let us know. I have coded on my 2019 to remember last setting which is always sport for me.

I've not tinkered with BMWs... but on both my Lexus and Mercedes, the first thing that I did after taking new car delivery was spend a few days to locate the GPS and cellular antenna/modules to prevent them from communicating with Mercedes, Lexus, or anybody else, without my express consent. (not an easy feat as I had to desolder quite a few parts after taking off most of the dash and parts under the hood)

Thanks for that bit of info. As long as there is a way to turn it off then I'll be happy. It could be that the last car I drove implemented the auto stop/start function so poorly that it became annoying.

If BMW has found a way to make the transition smooth and nearly imperceptible then I may not worry about it.

It's sad, because I had a Chevy Malibu rental a few months ago...GM has nailed the seamless auto stop/start system (and little else...)

I have all of 150 miles on my new X1, but so far, I find it pretty seamless and unobtrusive.

Oh the stop/start on the X1 is way way better than on my F30 3-Series, which was very noticeable.

Is the start/stop disabled when you are not wearing seat belt in the X1?
My Levante disables auto stop if seat belt is not worn.

We have had this debate in the X3 forum and I'm genuinely unsure why anyone would want or need the latest stop start disabled. It's utterly seamless, saves you fuel and money (I mean why waste a limited commodity).

I'm not sure anyone in the UK really disables it, maybe its a US think of lets kill the planet faster, genuinely don't know. The old systems used to be a bit of a pain I get that but for something that has existed for a over a decade with astonishingly few issues or failures and not its sooo good and as part of the solution adds power not removes it, I just leave it to do the stunning job.

On my 2020 4-series, the hesitation off the line from a stop was very noticeable to me and was more of a hindrance than a convenience, so I coded it out after a week of driving the car. If the X1 is not that noticeable I may not need to disable it. I'm am curious though, you say it adds power. How does it do this?

I've been on test drives in two different X1. One was the dealer's demo X1 and the other one was a customer cancelled order.

On both of them, I could barely feel that the engines had turned off when I stopped at a red light. However, when the engines were restarting again, there was definitely a slight lag and vibration.

It's not as bad as on a Mercedes GLC(2022). My sister's 2023 Toyota 4Runner also had absolutely no lag from the engine auto stop/start of any kind when I borrowed it for a week last month.(because it's one of the few "new" SUVs that don't have this "feature")
