Panerai
Any fans of Panerai? Opinions about the brand?
Been thinking about picking up either a PAM 005, 111, 180, or 380 in the future. Either that or an IWC Portuguese Chronograph. |

like the watches. don't really care for any of the people I know who have bought them. they tend to attract real D-B's. that said, I like the 270 (the 10-day movement)

From a build quality they're top notch. Styling, you either love it or hate it I've never seen anyone fall in the middle.

I know several Paneristi - real good guys and very dedicated. Most of the watches aren't my thing but that's just personal preference. It seems that they hold value reasonably well. Oh, and Pam owners keep most of the world's custom strap makers in business.

At first I wanted a 111, but decided to go with a 510 because of the in-house movement. 44mm seems huge at first but you'll get used to it (my wrist is about 6.75"). Here it is with a custom strap from SNPR:

I'd wear one for sure if they made a left hand version, I have a number of 44mm plus watches but the crown / guard on this one bothers me. For those nervous about going so big, unless you're really small the size will grow on you / you'll get used to it.

joking! lol imo, if it doesn't hang over the edges of your wrist i think you'll be fine. don't take this the wrong way but my wife wears some large fashion watches sometimes and they look fine.

I like the look of the Pams, but I hate the size of most of them (they have a few 40/42 mm models). I think if one just wants a Pam and has the money for it, go ahead and get one. There are some models that are collectible, but they are all going to be pre-owned purchases and they will be extremely expensive.
Some Pams are in-house and some aren't. If one is buying for the look and to have a quality watch, that's irrelevant. If one is seeking to resell the thing later, go with an in-house model. I don't own a Pam, so I can't speak to the ownership experience. Check with your local watchmakers to find out if they can handle service and maintenance on them. If they can, you shouldn't have any trouble. The thing you are trying to find out is if you can avoid the long wait times that are common when sending a watch back to the maker for service, and, of course, avoiding paying premium the makers charge for service. In that sense, it's quite like taking your BMW to the BMW store for routine service versus taking it to a qualified mechanic once the BMW free maintenance period has expired. (That's so for any high-dollar mechanical watch, not just Panerai.) All the best.

Is that a joke? I hope so... Base models are the easiest to find for sale. Have you checked www.paneristi.com watchuseek.com watchrecon.com ? I own two for now, a Zero and a 312. I love the brand and the styling...
