X5 vs ML

Yes, here we go. I'm looking for a CPO '12. The ML would be the current new model. the X5 would be the older model. the X5 (even the new 13+) are not safety rated like the ML's are. No small overlap etc. Very poor testing records from what I can see vs the ML. WHY? Why is the X5 not IIHS and Safecar.gov rated like the ML? How do they even get away with that? The ML had a awesome interior. It's the family rig, so... can't justify buying a unsafe car for more money and it's an older model. WTF BMW?

^no. I want to know why the X5 is not safety rated! ???? I like the older X5 body better. and I rather have the last year vs the first year of a platform. Generally speaking less issues and less TSB's/Recalls. I personally am rooting for the '12 X5 with the N55! White on black. But what's the scoop on the safety ratings?

Not to jump topics but if you're in the SUV market at least check out a Macan. I LOVE mine.

Ma can is quite a bit smaller than either the X or the ML.

My wife had a 2007 ML500 and it was great. If you go the ML route, get one with the air suspension.

Didn't realize as I haven't really looked deeply into either. Remember them being smaller but that was years ago that I looked.

Macan not really the size and it's the VW product. EEERRRRRRR buzzer. Try again. I hate VW. The Lincoln MKX was on our list, but again, older platform, crappy touch screen dash and not as safe as the ML. Volvo XC90, but it's from 2003 really. The ML seems to be the best option, but I'm trying to give the X5 a chance here.

A couple days ago our 2013 X5 was stopped at a light and some bloke in a Lexus plowed into it at 30mph. I knew the X5 wasn't crash rated when I bought it and I'm now thankful I trusted BMW as a brand and it didn't disappoint!

Just coming from a XC60 R the Macan is light years better. If you need bigger size that's a different story but I wouldn't dismiss it for being a VW. You could also scratch the Lambos, Veyrons and a host of other cars off the list for the same reason.

The ride between the two are totally different. One is soft and cushy, the other is stiff and sporty. I'd be sure to take that into account.

Benz looks like a van to me. The X5 on the other hand look aggressive and sporty. I have a 35d and very happy with it.

Yup, Macan is the best suv sold. Isn't much smaller than a X5. Macan is 6in shorter, but is actually wider than the X5.

And to simplify the Macan by calling it a VW product is just ill informed.

I'm not a P-car nut by any stretch of the imagination, but honestly if I could only have one car car that would probably be it. Is it the best thing out there for any one attribute? Probably not. Doesn't handle like a cayman, not as big as a Q7, little on the expensive side etc. But honestly it does just about everything exceptionally well.

Again, question at hand is why or how is the X5 not crash rated? That just seems nuts.

yeah... not sure why BMW wouldn't want their X5 IIHS, Safecar.gov and NCAP rated. Just seems moronic in today's informed consumer. Oh well, I like BMW, but my family's safety is ranked higher than BMW loyalty. ML it is with HID's and the options we want. No more base model, strip down Merc's. Learned that lesson with the '08 C300.
