Make the exhaust louder - center exhaust/DP?
Hello everyone,
I already have the MPE fitted, but I think the car is still too quiet (at least from the inside). I was thinking to make it louder with a catless DP, but I don't really want the engine warning turned on all the time. Is JB4 the only way to clear it? The problem with JB4 its that it voids warranty and insurance in Luxembourg. The alternative I thought of is to replace the center muffler with a straight pipe like this one: http://www.supersprint.com/en/IT/pro...093E280BA.aspx Anyone has any experience w/o the center muffler? Does it require cutting the exhaust? Any louder? Thanks for your answers |

The mid-pipe has a "resonator" that helps the exhaust pulses stabilize to keep proper back pressure to the rear muffler. You can remove it and it will increase the sound of the exhaust as the pulses will travel back to the muffler without being smooth out. Remember the factory exhaust is engineered to not only produce sound, but to efficiently move exhaust gases out of the car. Cutting and changing a factory exhaust is not recommended as you are disrupting the designed purpose.
The reason why full exhaust systems are so expensive (the good ones) is because they are engineered to provide a certain level of sound and still be able to do the job of keeping the proper exhaust frequency in the piping. When you change this without the correct engineering you make exhaust exit less efficient and resulting in poorer performance. A louder exhaust is not sign of a better system, but a properly done full exhaust system tuned to make the noise is. |

Exhaust mods are considered "illegal sound improvement": they don't change the car's dynamics and therefore the insurance is still valid. JB4 will be seen as a "performance improvement" which leads to a power that is higher than the one on car's papers (and therefore insured). Could you please tell me more about Cobb Tuning and BT Tool? I thought Cobb was a ECU attachment like JB4. BT Tool, I've never heard of |

you can get a catted downpipe which will not throw a code at manhart e.g.
so you won`t need a jb4. I`m getting a catted downpipe and a decatted midpipe next week.

I guess I am getting too old. I find the MPE too loud as it is. I can't imagine wanting something louder.

BT Tool is what a lot of shops used to detect the CEL/error codes and it'll define exactly the cause of it is. It can also tell the car to ignore those errors such as TPMS, catless, etc... However, the newer cars have a slight different computer encryption so last time the shop tried, BT Tool don't have that function. Here's more information on it: http://www.bavariantechnic.com/ ALSO, there's another way that's not guaranteed to work. Its called a o2 sensor spacer. Its cheap and worth a try but sometimes it'll work and sometimes won't. Basically it tries to create enough room that the computer might or might not sense the cat is missing. something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/281130517128?lpid=82 |

But it failed the "tunnel test", which is full throttle 4000-7000 revs in 3rd gear in a tunnel: I could only hear the wind... |

Completely agree... the burping on downshift/off-throttle is awesome, and it sounds great when revved standing still but in a tunnel or just some bursts of fun on the highway and you can barely hear it over the wind, if at all. And no, I am not talking about how it sounds inside the car, a lot of that is pumped through to us through the Active Sound stuff.

PS. anything with a cat will sound a lot more conservative if sound is what you're going for. |

also keep in mind that the cats are there to remove the smell so if you get catless downpipes, you will have a significant smell. but its not too bad, most people can live w/ it but its something to consider

and when you get rid of the cat on the midpipe, it will NOT throw a code. same thing on the n54. Like I said, my parts should arrive on monday and will be installed on friday. the manhart is cheaper. If you like I`ll pass you a contact. That`s not true. Not on the midpipe. Just when you get a catless downpipe.

I'm using a BMS Canbus tool to clear the fault code every now and then .
Actually u can just go with a 200cell downpipe with integrated O2 Bung, u get sound and no fault code . |
