So who's going to get the Dinan oil cooler?
I'm giving this some serious thought but at $2k plus labor I'm still hoping another tuner will release something similar at a lower price.

My thoughts precisely. I cannot imagine that many people would pay that amount, but I've been surprised before.
The cooler is a cheap $150 Derale cooler but then they add the neat hoses and the all-important fender liner vent. |

actually looks like a good product... still overpriced... but not too shabby Specifications Total Volume: Stock = 9.5 oz. / Dinan = 19 oz. Surface Area: Stock = 45 sq./in. / Dinan = 67.5 sq./in. Cooling Tubes: Stock = 10 / Dinan = 23 Tube Lengths: Stock = 90 in. / Dinan = 207 in. Tube Area: Stock = 112.5 sq./in. / Dinan = 414 sq./in. |

Is this supposed to be better than the stock oil cooler, or it for cars that BMW so kindly decided not to include it on?

So if we have the factory cooler, could we hook up this other cooler assuming it fits (not the Dinan cooler)?

Come spring, I might switch to 90% distilled, 9.5% coolant to protect the metals and 0.5% water wetter.
My hope is that the coolant will takeover some more cooling duty - alleviating the load on the oil. |

I can't help but wonder if a Dinan flashed car - even with all the additional power - will actually produce lower, or more stable, temps on track because of the higher water pump flow rates written into the flash? If it does the Dinan flash would seem to be a bargain.
Any thoughts on this? Am I dreaming? |

Well at least somebody did the R&D and it looks like you can definitely put in a cooler that will cause a lot more back pressure (many turns and longer tubing) without a problem. I would think it'd be easy to get a custom fab mount with a similar cooler and lines for around $500. Anybody know by chance which cooler that is and what diameter the tubes are? If so, it wouldn't be too hard to figure out how much head pressure it takes to pump oil through that cooler, and find something similar...

There's a link in this thread and here's the excerpt from the Dinan page:
"Remapped Water Pump Speeds. In an effort to more effectively control oil and water temperatures, which have been notably excessive even at stock boost pressures, the Dinan software actually increases water pump speeds as boost pressure increases. A much larger, more efficiently ducted oil cooler has also been developed, further improving heat exchange for lower and more consistent operating temperatures, even with the added boost pressure. " So it looks like the oil pump is going at the same speeds but electric water pump has been remapped to flow more when boost goes up.

That Dinan cooler also adds a revised scoop and larger exhaust vent. It appears to be a nice piece!
Here's a question...is either unit alone sufficient? Let's say you have a step car with the factory oil cooler. Would the Dinan flash allow you to run safe temps without also getting the larger cooler?

Exactly what I was asking in my post #12 above. My thinking (perhaps wishful thinking) was that if the flash reprograms the water pump for a higher flow rate at higher boost maybe this would be enough to stabilize temps on track even though the Dinan car is putting out a lot more power over stock.
