I think there are a few DJ's on here.

I'm a record producer looking to branch out into the basic foundation of playing and mixing my music for the masses. (e.g. Avicii, Calvin Harris, Aiko, Skrillex, etc...)

Any of you guys know a good intermediate setup for me? I'm thinking NI's Traktor Kontrol S4.

not a dj but i've designed covers for cd's and blu-rays/dvds.

knew a few dj's too and they made some solid cash as stated above

Very profitable.

Calvin Harris was averaging $200k PER NIGHT in Vegas. He cleared $46M in 2013. Mind you, this is just to basically play your own music.

With the rising popularity of edm music and these DJs in vegas, music festivals, etc.... the competition is growing and 99.999999999% of the DJs are nothing special/wont reach that level of compensation

Yea, I hear on your second point. Why get involved in DJ'ing if the market is already so saturated and you'll more than likely never make it that far?

Is that about correct?

Well the thing is, and this is my personal view on it, the market is so accessible.... more so than other forms of music were before because people can start practicing with just software on their computer at home, etc..... In the past, other popular types of music needed years and years of practice on certain instruments, putting a band together, etc...

That makes it really tough to stand out and get attention. With the amount of talent out there, it seems like it is literally pretty much all luck to get to that point....

Now on the other hand, it would be an amazing life style and I would love to live that life..... just seems pretty impossible.

Maybe you're missing the point of this thread. I'm not looking to be the next international DJ. I'm a record producer. I simply want to know what is a intermediate setup to play my music.

I've been winning beat battles in my area and have been earning a decent amount of cash too. It would be a lot easier to display my music from a DJ setup than straight from my music software.

Also, yes it's true anybody can DJ, anybody can make music, anybody can play basketball, football, cook food, skateboard, etc... but it's those that are extraordinarily good at it that get noticed.

I wasn't making anywhere near $200k per night LOL. I got started working weddings, sweet 16's etc. I was 20 years old making $100.00 an hour with a four hour minimum. My first gig I had 1 turntable, two 10 inch speakers, and about 20 records LOL. A family member hired me for a small get together. I had no idea what I was doing but it gave me a feel of what it was like to get people on their feet. Eventually I scraped up some money and built up my music inventory and equipment. Before I knew it I had a full blown company. Smoke machines, lighting, dancers, etc. I was working every weekend raking in about $4k a month. To a 20 year old struggling to get through college that was great money. Not to mention that I also had a part time job during the day. Eventually I got a full time job in finance and I ended up selling my equipment. Till this day I wonder where I would be if I kept it up. I had a blast while it lasted!

Nice! Sounds like you really got into it back then! I've gotten the taste of rocking a crowd of roughly 500 people with my own music and they want me back.

Are we talking about the mainstream DJs? Most of them do their own remixes of songs or have original songs that command the attention of thousands or millions of people. There has to be some skill or methodology behind that. Not 100% without talent. When they do a set at a club, it's just to showcase their hard work.
