Bit Weird

After a long ish motorway cruise I get one slip of the clutch when I leave at a junction usually in 5th gear. Is this a sign that the clutch will need replacing soon?

A year ago I had the car mapped by evolve to 305bhp and 500lb ft but I had clutch slip straight away. Evolve put on a lower map, 280bhp and 430lb ft, and the car has held the power and torque just fine.

Evolve have said that they will put the higher power map on again when I do replace the clutch.

Does anyone know how much I would be looking at cost wise? Also will I need a new flywheel? The car is now on 102k.

Cheers guys

Your clutch was slipping after first attempt , so instead fixing the problem you decided to hide it with the milder map .
Clutch and flyweel cost around £400 plus fitting .

Its not hiding.
Its called ruling out with changing the map (aggressiveness of engine) to see if clutch slipping disappears.
And if it does, you get the idea.
If OP was not interested to change the clutch plate, why would he start this thread....

Sorry misunderstood. Clutch and flywheel cost more than £400 in parts. My vauxhal flywheel cost £600 alone. I have a friend that does all my work. He can do it if you are near welwyn.

No,it's called hiding the problem , good tuner wouldn't remap car with slipping clutch but advice to replace it first . At least that how it work on vag scene, but looks like bmw owner/tuners don't give a shit .

Perhaps, inconsistencies. In your first post, you are accusing OP of something which he did not do deliberately.

In your later post, you are accusing the tuner which remapped the car and problem was evident after that.

And bmw tuner / owners care more than VAG AFAIK.

Who am I hiding the problem from?! I'm not selling the car so I'm hiding a problem from myself! Evolve offered to map my car for free to a lower level until I was in a position to change the clutch. I found this to be a very useful thing for them to do.

No judder and it always holds the power and torque, apart from two occasions, Saturday and Sunday morning when it slipped once, both after coming off the motorway

At you're mileage I would say a clutch could well be on the cards. You'll get a clutch kit for around £250.if there's no judder felt I would safely assume the flywheel is fine.

Have you considered an 'uprated' clutch?

http://www.clutch-specialists.co.uk/..._p26378710.htm

i have the same issue. Occasional slip, usually 4th or 5th gear, around 2500rpm @ full throttle.

I think its around £500 to £700 if the flywheel is not changed.
Probably getting on for £1500 if it is.

My concern is, unless the tune is reduced, if the same standard clutch is fitted, it will happen again.
If the tune is reduced, it probably won't happen anyway so won't need changing?
But I don't know of anyone who has had it done.

My worry with a performance clutch is day to day usability. I hear what your saying though about the OEM clutch slipping again. Evolve told me that a good standard clutch should be fine so I don't know

I would doubt that and go for upgrade. What if it fails in one year time again? Where do you stand.

If you change it, then do it proper and do it with upgraded part.

Yes I guess so. Pay once and do it right. But do usable performance clutches exist?

I had the same with my S3, unfortunately it seems once it starts slipping its already done the damage and wont be long before it goes, with a lower map or not.

Definately go with the uprated clutch as these engines respond real well to remaps and its that hefty torque figure that takes its toll on the plates!

Coming from the VAG scene..... I never knew the cost of a new clutch on an E90 was so expensive!

I think it's the Labour that bumps the price up.

Does anyone know of a good priced performance clutch that is still useable on a daily commute?
