We've finally spotted BMW's answer to the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 sedan. The F52 1 Series Sedan is built upon the FWD platform which will also underpin the the next generation 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series Coupe/Convertible to follow after this sedan. It will also be offered with AWD xDrive.

BMW has previously gone on the record as saying that it "sees little need for a sedan smaller than the 3-Series," but it seems that the company has either reversed course, or were masking their plans from competitors until now.

Engine offerings will top out at 4 cylinders. The 1 Series sedan will come in 120i and 125i models - source (ynguldyn).

All UKL cars are under F.
All Carbon intensified 35UP cars are under G.
All BMWi cars are under i.
All joint Toyota-BMW cars are under another designation.

Yes its FWD but with xDrive also.

The front and rear end looks something like this. And will be available as a Sport hatch also.

Why not launch it as a "Gxx" already? We are almost on the 1 series facelift, until this thing gets to the market BMW will be lauching the next gen 1-series..this is gonna be like the X4 to the X3. A new car with dated interior and underpinning.

Too bad it is more of a sedan than a four door coupe like the CLA.

Edit: can you elaborate more on this sport hatch variant? We will have the 1 series hatch and another one based on this car or they will be the same thing?

so BMW is going to ruin the 1 Series and then 2 Series and later 3 Series with this FWD drive thing?

with RWD is gone, 1 Series Sedan needs lots of work to pass Audi A3.

I really could be tempted to get one next, although not in FWD! The F30 is a bit big & i guess the G will be even bigger!

Although if there's no 3l diesel available that could be a deal breaker! And it should be called the 2 series saloon/sedan

Where are you getting information that the 3er is going FWD?
It is not. The next 3er due before the end of the decade is still RWD.

The Audi A3 is FWD.

RWD is a major differentiator for BMW. It will be interesting to see how a FWD bimmer sells. Sorry, Scott, but I'm hoping this one flops I don't want BMW getting any ideas about the rest of the line-up.

Oh mannnnn. Makes me cringe. People will now associate the 1-series with fwd "entry level" bmw if they didn't think that already.

I just was educating some. You have no ideas the PMs of BMW FWD queries against the "RWD of the CLA and A3 Sedan".

Correct, hence 35up i.e. The 3 series and 5 series will be a different platform to the 1/2 series/mini platform!

Yes it does look like an S40, I hope they don't go too radical with the front end though as with magazine render in Scott's post. I would like to see the smiley face front end as on the 2

Why BMW, why?

Is there truly a reason to go FWD? Of course there is, Money!

So how is BMW going to be really different from the others going forward? Yes, awesome, entry level sedan, FWD, for 30k? Im sure a lot of people will be tempted.

But maybe they should restate their slogan as well, as I just don't think the "Pure Driving Pleasure" thing is still applicable once this thing is released.

Still RWD - not like the future Z a car I was really interested in until I found it will be fwd, smaller (yes bmw not every new gen needs to grow 10cm - someone clearly has a "size issue" in Munchen), and almost 10% lighter than previous gen (bmw saying that a car that weights 2 tonnes like the X5 and saying its lighter than its previous gen and when I read the small lines its only 15kg less!! 15kg yes, thats hardly lighter.

if they started it they will continue, Why not?
lots of magazines and sites are kinda expecting that

I know the Audi A3 is FWD/Quattro, but with BMW losing its main ID against it...Audi A3 becomes a real player...it looks good and the interior is great.

Going back to the steering issue have you not updated your software via your service department? Many here have and have found improvement?

Regarding the future Z cars.
You mean the UKL based FWD Z1?

The Z4 becomes the Z5 and will share with a Toyota as will a Z3 Both are RWD.
The engineering schematics for the Carbon intensive architecture is impressive. You are going to see so much for so little with the combined force of BMW and Toyota using all their resources available.

BMW wants to re-invent its Z series sports cars and make them as cutting edge and influential as the BMWi models by visual appearance and state of the art engineering to highlight a new BMW philosophy for sports cars.

Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Homage concepts are the template for the visuals. Plans also include a slightly massaged three cylinder entirely unique and exclusive in the Z3 Mille Miglia mimicking the classic 328 to provide excellent dynamics using lightweight materials.

But since Toyota are using the joint architecture for a next gen GT86 based Sedan, its one idea under discussion in Munich, essentially a four dr Z model and potentially an SAV Z model. Nothing has come to light yet but it is a niche that BMW are investigating.

this morning at 10:30 I was at my bmw dealer test driving the new X4 3.0d. Steering even felt more artificial than on my X3. at 11:45 I was at my porsche dealer - I am trading my X3 for a Macan this october - and despite not beeing up there with the cayman it is on another level compared to the bmw set up. perhaps the brand new X4 I tested didnt get the updated software.
