cold start misfires and CEL.
Over the past few months ive noticed on cold starts that the engine would run a little rough for a few seconds then clear up. Now I can feel the engine misfiring on cold starts. Once the engine is warm, the car idles and drives with no roughness or misfires (well maybe not now lol)
Saturday I started the car after it sat overnight and it threw a CEL. I had to use the car so I drove right to the gas station down the street (20 miles left to E), threw in $20 and after starting back up, the car idled great and no CEL. Yesterday it idled rough and could feel a misfire until I drove off and then it cleared up. Today, the same thing but noticeable white smoke (it was chilly this morning) and CEL is back. I didnt want to drive to work with a limping car so instead I checked the codes and drove my Mustang. The car's only mods are DCI, JB4, and BB axle backs. The plugs and coil packs were done and 62k (by the PO) the car now has 77k. Has been on JB4 for about 2k miles now. Im going to start with the plugs and go from there. My question is regarding the catalyst CEL. Could that be caused by the two cylinders misfiring on the same bank? The car has ran great for the year that I owned it, no problems at all until now. I believe the car has had the injectors replaced but not under the December 2010 SI B13 14 10 recall. Ill call a SA and see what they say.

No open recalls on the car according to a SA at my local dealer. Guess I can call BMWNA and see what they say about the recall and if my car was affected. It falls in between the dates on the recall.
Im still going to order the plugs and try that as well. |

Sounds exactly like leaking injectors. It's flooding the plug overnight and causing that rough cold start and CEL with the smoke. My father's 07 335i had the exact same problems and it turned out to be the injectors. Covered under the recall, thankfully!

Went home after work yesterday and the car started up and idled with no problems or CEL. Ill take it into an indy shop and see what they say when I get back.
About that injector recall...Did that affect all cars built between the two dates listed or only certain e92's? |

If your vin shows no open recalls, then it was done and any injectors that qualified for replacement based on the injector part number would have been replaced. Not every injector got replaced. some cars had 2 or 3 etc.

There are no open recalls on the car and no sticker on the hood near the windshield. The only way I could confirm would to look at the part numbers on the injectors.
As far as it cranking,Ill have to get a video because its hard to describe. I wouldn't say that it is cranking long. I usually hit the start button and it fires right up. I'll pull the plugs next week and see what I can find. Im parking the car for the winter soon so if an injector needs to be replaced it will have to be done next year. |

After reading this thread Im 100% its injectors. He had the same issues as well as a whistle coming from the engine bay when the CEL and white smoke was happening. Still not sure what the whistle was about but it didnt happen again when I started the car back up later that day.
My plan so far is to check the PN and index's on the injectors to see if they can be replaced individually. I rather do the work myself to avoid labor charges and have an indy code them in. Ive read the DIY but still have a question. Can I re-use the decoupling ring and seals or should those be replaced at the same time? http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=767433 |

You need new seals and couplers. You would also need the tool to change the seals. If it was my car I would do all six since you will not have the better ones in there anyways. New injectors come with the seal installed.

Hmm okay well then maybe I'll just have the Indy do the install and I'll purchase the injectors myself from tischer. $8xx for all the injectors and a couple hundred for labor. The price you pay for owning an bmw out of warranty. Lol

INPS and all other required coding software is loaded on my laptop
One stop obd-usb cable is ordered new Bosch plugs are ordered Pulling plugs when I get home to determine how many injectors I need. If its only cylinders 4 and 5 that are bad then I'll purchase two for the time being. Rather not drop $800 some dollars at the moment if I dont have to. Any way I can diagnose if both cylinder 4 and 5 injectors have gone bad? |

Start car cold and run for 5-10 seconds turn off and immediately pull plugs on suspect cylinders. If plug is wet, injector is bad. Or, bmw has a test for them that can be run.
