Car running rough/Faulty Fuel Injectors

Dealership told me my fuel injectors are faulty and need to be replaced. How much should that cost? (Out of warranty)

They quoted me $2160.

In Canada, it would run you 3840$. Just did mine and had a "deal" 50% off, 1920$ taxes in (taxes were like 260$...)

I'm sure you can do them yourself, but i'm not sure of the logistics involved. They need to be coded in I believe. Maybe contact some indy's and see what they think before spending 1k+.

Are you seeing any CEL codes?

No CEL codes, but the engine is noticeably running rough/rumbling when I first start the car, sometimes has a long crank as well. It calms down afterwards though.

Yeah I was thinking about doing them myself too, but then noticed they need to be coded and kind of stopped reading on there lol.

Reading through this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...fuel+injectors

is certainly not reassuring re: spending $2K to replace the fuel injectors.

You got robbed dude. For that price you could have bought an INPA cable and coded them yourself.

Everyone who has the rough idles, hard starts, etc. when were your plugs last replaced? Walnut blasting done? I'm not saying it's a guaranteed fix, but I'd start there and not 2k+.

how many miles on your car? when were the spark plugs last replaced? has your HPFP been replaced?

have you had the injector recall done on your car by BMW?

the injectors on these cars *can* go bad, but dont take the dealer's word for it without checking things out, especially without getting a good second opinion.

try replacing the cheapest part(s) first; spark plugs. After that if things don't improve, look at the ignition coils, as they can go bad over time.

if the injectors need to be replaced do NOT have it done at the dealer (unless they are going warranty them and not charge you), take it to a independent shop that is familiar with the N54 motor and who can CODE the injectors properly after installing them. Or if you have local guys who are N54 enthusiasts you can install them yourself (assuming you can do plugs and other installs) and get one of those local gurus to code the new injectors. The install is not that bad, but the coding is crucial for the injectors to work properly.

They shouldn't cost more than 200 a peice, if you can install yourself, and then take it to a BMW shop or Indy to code for $around 75, unless you can code yourself.make sure you write down the values needed for coding which are the #s written on the actual injectors themselves, so the shop knows.

Indeed, but ECS sells 6 injectors (with decoupling elements) for 955$ + 6 spark plugs for 100$ + ship 60$ + duty 40$ + random brokerage fees + conversion to CAD = approx 1300$, so I could save 600$ if I can code myself. But... I had another "old warranty related" issue I wanted them to cover. Ended up, the weird clutch rattle when I depress the clutch pedal isnt a clutch issue. It dissapeared at the same time they changed the injectors.

All in all, I got robbed

An independent shop that knows what they're doing would probably be a whole helluva lot cheaper.

Leaking injectors cause the cold start roughness. The fuel leaks on one or more injectors into the cylinder. To identify, let the car sit and cool off for a few hours, then pull the cowl and acoustic covers. Fire the car up. If it's running rough, let it go for about 5 seconds, then shut down. If not, try again later.

Once you've run for 5 seconds and shut down, pull the spark plugs. Any wet plugs indicate a leaking injector. You may be able to get away with replacing only a couple - depends on what revision injector is in your car already. Revision -12 is the latest, and they must be replaced in banks of 3. Also requires coding the DME with the new injector numbers (firing energy and flow rate).

Rough cold start are often related to leaky injectors. But long crank is often related to HPFP.

About 61K miles. Both the HPFP and Injectors were replaced under the recall.

The $2K quote the dealer offered also includes a 3 year warranty on the parts and the labor.

They are charging $1598 for the injectors in total, so about $266 a piece... Could I just buy them on getbmwparts.com? Are these NOT the injectors I need? or Do I need additional parts with these: http://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/200...onent=INJECTOR

$266 each is a lot higher than the BMW retail of $175.70. The decouplers are $5.43 each, so that's not even close, either.

Gotta pay for that fancy building and premises somehow, I guess. Helps indy shops like me stay in business

Crazy right? Haha.

So those injectors in the link at $175.70 (online price of $140) are the correct ones?

Yep. That catalog shows the actual BMW retail price. All dealers mark up parts, but I didn't think it was that significant. getbmwparts.com also lists actual retail prices. They're in MD and have a HUGE stock of original BMW parts on hand.

at what mileage was the injector recall done? how many injectors did they replace? if it was recently and the one(s) that have gone bad (assuming) should be replaced by the dealer, depending how lenient your dealer is.

do you really need the three year warranty? still have the car in 3 years? just a thought

what James listed out is what you need....and a much cheaper route, which will allow you to spend the remaining money somewhere else

Easy fix 30-45 minutes of labor.
$600 for 6 injectors off eBay brand new. 6 decouplers $5 each
And someone off the forum that codes. 12 pack and pizza.
