Question Fault codes 330d

Hello all,

I've recently picked up a '10 plate 330d (e92 / Manual), which has 90k on the clock.

I've been getting paranoid recently about the car (as I love it, came from a 1.7 Astra!).

Sometimes I feel like the power isn't quite there (this isn't consistent), but i'm not sure if that's because i'm still getting used to the gear box.

Anyway I went ahead and bought a WiFi code reader to see if there is any issues (No engine light on dash).

And I got the following codes back. Only one of which has a description.

P3043
P0401 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
C00D4
C0501
C00E9
C0C9E
C0C9F

Now i'm not a mechanic at all and I haven't ever checked fault codes before but I'm not sure if I should clear them and see if they come back.

Or if every single fault should be looked at.

I'm aware that BMW offer a diagnostic check for £150 inc VAT which they will basically do what I have done already but actually translate the codes for me and give me a better idea of what actually needs doing.

I need some advice on what to do next.

Thanks.

P3043 is EGR related too.

Those codes I'm guessing are ODBII generic. You really need BMW specific codes. As you have a wifi adapter I'd purchase BMWhat app for your iPhone or android phone. Or even better get a K+DCAN use cable and INPA / Rheingold for complete BMW diagnosis.

So, seems the EGR valve is sticking. I'd start by cleaning / replacing it.

I'm betting you'll have a DPF fault as well. Have you noticed the DPF attempting a regen recently?

Are you seeing any smoke out of the exhaust?

I'd never take it to BMW. If you don't want to read the BMW spec codes yourself take it to an independent. They will tell you what's up and what needs doing. Where about are you in the UK?

The 330d is a great car, just make sure you look after it. Investing in a way to read BMW spec codes is a must for any BMW owner in my opinion.

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question re clearing the codes.

I'm not sure what code reader you have but does it say if the fault is currently present?

Below are 2 more of your codes...

C00D4 - wheel speed sensor right rear low input
C0501 - power steering Solenoid Circuit Range/Performance

I'd clear the codes first and see if they reappear after going for a run in the car.

I got the BMWhat app and took a look, just the BMW error codes came up this time (EGR related).

No smoke out of the exhaust although it is pretty hard to tell when driving.

Based in Cambridge.

I cleared the codes and have driven 120 miles since and the codes havent come back. Does this mean everything is ok? Or should I still look at the EGR valve?

Good stuff. I'd still give the EGR a clean as per Kris's instructions.

does the engine get up to temp (hot) maybe the EGR needs changing, easy to do and quite cheap to buy, the reason I'm saying this its all part and coupled to the DPF regeneration process.

Can't find much online about this.

Just to update you guys with that error code,

I'm booked in on monday for an EGR replacement (don't want to risk cleaning it and doing it myself).

I'll let you know if the code goes away after that.

Hi cadbm

Did you get your egr replaced and if so did it clear that regain control code?

Cheers

I've waited a week to make sure the code has gone, and it has! Noticed a slight boost in the responsiveness of the car as well which is good.

I kept the old valve and took some crappy photos, it cost me about £230 (parts+labour).

Excellent!

Pleased it's resolved your fault code and thanks for letting me know

Mine is in for service next week and I have the extended warranty, hoping that will cover it's replacement.

Cheers again
