Castrol Oil for 320D N47 D20

I checked with my BMW dealer at my location and asked them what oil to use in my 320d, they informed me I need to purchase the oil they supply and is approved by BMW.

I checked with the Castrol outlet and the only oil they have is Castrol Edge 0w-40 and on the container it is rated to LL01

I asked them if they have a 5w-30 rated to LL04, and they informed me this one is not available.

I would like to know if it will be ok to use the LL01 ?, I do not like the time scale that BMW prescribe so the oil will be drained and replaced by myself in between the BMW service period.

You need to use LL04 which is available in 0w-30 and 5w-30 variants. Can use either of those but needs to be LL04 spec.

Please can you let me know why I will be unable to use the LLO1.

The BMW outlet has the canister they have marked only with BMW approved engine oil and they are using this for petrol and diesel engines. It has no LL01 or LL04 marked on the container.

The only oil that they have different is for the M series.

the LL-01 are oil specs released on 2001 and correspondingly Long Life LL-04 are the ones released during 2004.
there are no newer "oil specs version" till now so, all vehicles being built after 2004 should use LL-04 oil specs.
from what I have read, the petrol engines of E9x could use LL-01 (especially those of indirect injection i.e. N46) but I don't think that this could be done with diesel engines too.

Castrol edge 5w30 is LL-04 and is what I and the majority of the guys who service their own car use. I did once stumble upon a website (foreign but translated) that showed how loads of different oils burnt in a test condition and how much carbon is left, Edge impressed me then and that's why I use it.

Gent's thanks for all the info, I have contacted Castrol in Australia and obtained a print out from there web site on what I require. Was given a very fast reply.

I called the BMW main office in Bangkok and was passed to someone in the technical department. I asked him what oil to use in my 320D and he told me 5w-30, when I asked him regarding LL01 & LL04 he went silent.

I also called the main Castrol office in Bangkok and asked them the same question. They informed me they did not know what Castrol type is suitable, and to call BMW technical department.

Its very difficult over here trying to get a direct answer to a simple question
