Canon 7D Mark II
Has anyone purchased or used the new Canon 7D mk2 yet? I am interested in some early reviews by forum members besides what is on the web and any shots uploaded to their Flickr, etc.
The camera appears to be gaining some traction in the market and selling better than most people assumed when seeing the specs initially. High ISO for a crop sensor seems to be the real winner here w/ 10 fps. Canon's site to the camera: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consum...7dmkii_feature *Edit* - it appears that there is some chatter in the Official General Photography forum about the new 7d. When searching tags, my results didn't show that. Still looking forward to some feedback...thanks!

I'm very happy with it so far, but I have only really used it for one outing. I will have more to say in a month or so. The 10 fps is freaking awesome though

Which camera bodies are you coming from in the past? Original 7d?

Good to see this thread. I'm in the market for an upgrade from my 50D and have held off buying a 6D as the 7D MkII might just fit the bill.

Top of the heap:
Waxing Gibbous Moon by dcstep, on Flickr That's ISO 800, with no NR, hand held. I'm coming from 5D MkII, 7D, 5D MkIII and a loaner 1D X for 10-days. I'm no longer Jonesing for a 1D X. I've tagged my 7D MkII images on Flickr, so you can see all I've posted there pretty easily.

It's as good as Canon makes and better than the other brands. Read some preliminary reviews, that's the main point of improvement.

One thing I really like on this camera is the ability to adjust the frame rate on continuous shooting. The 10 fps is truly awesome, but also huge overkill in some situations. I dialed my low speed to 6FPS, and its a nice alternative.

I'm either at 1 or 10-fps.

Well after work tonight I tested the limits of both. I saw that one of my favorite
raptors has returned to hunting at my local city park, and set out with the 7D fully loaded at 10FPS and Case 1 set. It tracked this white-tailed kite effortlessly from a bright gray sky background to the clutter you see here. It's actually a pretty small target that my other cameras would really struggle to keep up with. This was shot with the nicely hand-hold-able 300mm2.8 + 1.4TC for a 420mm shot. After this series I went back to the car and swapped out the 1.4 for the 2X. I was using auto ISO with +1 EC dialed in. This worked pretty well, although as it got darker, I dialed up the EC to 1.3 when using the 2X. White birds can be tricky. Going For It! by lennycarl08, on Flickr |

No major jump in image quality, but better than the original. The AF and FPS are mind blowing however. If you are into action or wildlife photography and can't afford a 1DX, there is nothing better on the market at this price point IMO.
I'm going bird hunting this morning with it, and will have further to say and hopefully some shots to post this evening. |

I think it's been said, but you do pick up close to one-stop in dynamic range and noise performance, so ISO 1600 is very usable, even for critical shots. You still need to avoid underexposing.
Like Ed says, the AF and FPS are top of the heap. Only when you start adding TCs to super-telephotos does the 1D X separate itself. Of course, the 1D X is still the ultimate in high-ISO performance. If you don't shot wildlife or sports, then you don't need the super-AF and 10-fps and the 5D MkIII might be a better choice. If you need that functionality and you shoot focal-length limited a lot, then the 7D2 is a must have.

This is why I love this camera. Locked on flying straight at me.

People that haven't done that can't appreciate how hard it is to keep that in focus, even with a great camera. Well done.

For what you want, I would totally agree! The Mk III would be much better for indoor low light stuff with kids, and really is a great do-it-all body.

I posted a couple of high-ISO images taken with my 7D MkII, in this thread:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...27637&page=269 See panels 5909 and 5911. Two things are happening. The cameras are getting better, but the 7D MkII is still not as good as it's full-frame brethren at high-ISOs, and the NR software is improving. Looking at the Raw images, they were very noisy before Raw conversion, BUT I applied DxO Optics Pro's PRIME noise reduction at 80% of it's Default and got what I consider to be very pleasing results for pictures taken almost at dark (20 to 30-minutes after sunset). PRIME does a pixel-by-pixel comparison and correction of noise. Look full-screen and you'll see that I left in some Luminescence noise so that details were preserved. Luminescence doesn't personally bother me much, since it looks like grain to me and doesn't mess up colors. Your taste might vary, but I like to preserve details in wildlife shots.
