"ticking" noise at idle and when let off gas and now 2A87 Error Code
Car: 2008 E90 335i
Recently I have noticed some weird noises coming from my car, they occur both when it is cold as well when it is warm. The first noise I hear sounds like a ticking, or clicking sound. I originally thought it might be an exhaust leak but am starting to think it is not. The noise occurs at idle. When I press the gas the noise seems to go away, but immediately when I let off the gas pedal the ticking noise gets very loud for a second, then goes back to a softer tick. I have also heard a "whining" noise at idle. The whining noise goes away when I press the gas. As I was driving today I went into limp mode and checked the code and got 3100 low boost and 2A87 Outlet - Vanos variable cam control test, mechanics. Could the vanos be what is causing these noises? Or does this seem to be two separate issues? Thanks for your help! |

Time to clean your vanos solenoids. Easy to do and more than likely will correct this issue. Use the link below for removal and there are steps within the DIY showing how to clean the solenoids with carb cleaner and compressed air.

I have this same sound after i installed downpipes. I have heard people say it is the wastegate rattling when there is no boost, so when you step on the gas everything psi's up and the wastegate is held tight thus no more ticking/rattling.
But I am no expert!

I had a ticking noise since 15k miles. The dealer suggested half a dozen things including wastegates/fuel injectors/valvetrain chatter/vanos solenoids. It never affected performance so I never gave it much though.

I'm having the same problem. I've done a lot of searching and come to conclusion that the turbo's need to be replaced because of faulty waste gates. Good luck
