using castrol syntec 0w-40?
Hey has anyone ever used castrol syntec 0w-40 in their n54? I normally use 0w-30 but theres currently a sale on 0w-40 at the local shop. I am unweary of the weight of the oil as I live in socal temperatures.

Does it meet BMW's long life LL-01 specs? If not I personally would not use it. However, there are tons of people who swear that it's okay to use non LL-01 oil. How I look at it is why take the risk, even a little one, just to save a few bucks. Since you're in SOCAL, just stick to Mobil1 0w-40 (LL-01) that is readily available at most if not all walmarts for less than $26 /5qt.

The only castrol oil that I would use are the 0w-30 and 0w-40 European formula which uses full synthetic base.
Mobile 1 shears pretty badly in our engine from the oil reports I have seen.

They make 0w-30 euro formula (good ol german Castrol that has been around for years) and now 0w-40 euro formula (a somewhat new oil that has been developed for the us market) The 40 is slightly higher, but castrols old 0w-30 was closer to a 40 weight than a 30 weight anyway whenever tested. either one should be okay if LL01 approved, but you might want to get your oil analyzed after use of the 40.
side note: all euro formula Castrol oil is now manufactured in Belgium, so it isn't german Castrol any longer....but rather Belgian Castrol lmao
