If you are just looking at those two because of the $100 price point then I would go with JB3. Just keep in mind that the JB3 is no longer supported by BMS if a problem were to arise. As others mentioned, JB4 G5 is the best/newest option but its around $500.

The JB+ features a faster install and does not require you to touch the ECU. The JB3 is a more robust system including map switching, direct boost solenoid control, throttle position mapping, and many other additional features that allow it to produce a lot more power. On average the JB+ gives 40-50hp to the wheels, while the JB3 gives 70-80hp to the wheels, on an otherwise stock car.

The JB3 has long been discontinued and may not be compatible with newer DME software.

JB4 is your best bet.

I would get JB3 over JB+ but consider upgrading soon. The JB3 isn't as safe as the JB4 is.

It uses outdated technology. The fueling capacity and ignition timing is not nearly as good as the JB4 from a safety standpoint. The JB4 has better control of fuel, ignition and boost. The JB4 also comes with conservative maps out of the gate compared to JB3. The Jb4 is able to monitor all 6 cylinders now too.

The JB3 just rides the knock sensors and fueling is typically very lean in the low-mid range.

I'd sooner to tell you to save up but I do know guys that are still using JB3 to this day since 2008.

If you need to stay in the $100 range, you shouldn't be buying a tune period. Save up for something better.

Save your money and pick up the JB4 when you can! Or keep your eyes peeled for a used one!

Don't forget to factor in the cost for replacing the spark plugs if they have more than about 30-40k on them. When tuned they should be changed every 25k to avoid misfires, etc.

Get the new JB4 G5 so you'll be able to update it, and have some support incase you need help from Terry or Russell@BMS

+1

The JB4 has to be one of the best bang for the buck tunes out there in the Euro car scene. A lot cheaper than the tunes for the Audi's and VW's that don't yield anywhere near that gain. If $100 is your limit for spending on a BMW 335i, I think you're driving the wrong car. Especially since you will be needing some fresh spark plugs to compliment that new tune, even if you go with the very outdated JB3.

I have a jb+, it works fine. Makes a very noticeable difference over stock. I have no desire to drive the car without some kind of power adder. That being said, I am switching to a used cobb soon as I want to make good use of the e85 in my area.

I think im going with a jb+ for now only reason for sticking with 100 dollar range is because i just got new valave cover gasket sparks and doing oil change and bms dci so i need to save up for the jb4 next just wondering for the time being what would be a better choice.

For $100 budget get the $180 BT cable and load up a canned OFT tune. You'll want one when you go JB4 anyway. That should provide a real good bump in power for under $200.

If you have to stay in the $100 range you should fork over another $100 and get a $200 BT cable and flash one of shiv's stage 0/1 XDFs using the free flash software (or can we still not say this although everybody who wants to know knows this by now?). Safer than all that, affordable, way more low end tq and probably better everything than a outdated jb3. If you ever decide to get a current jb4 you can still use what you have to "backend" flash the piggyback.

While I don't like having a tune without a good way to log (BT logging is a bit cumbsersome), what y'all suggested is a good idea. I have flashed a few friends cars to OFT Stage 1 and it's a pretty good base tune. I ran it on my car for a short time as well. A friend of mine dyno'd at 344/395 with 93octane and everything else completely stock down to the stock air box. I wouldn't pay much attention to the JB4 Map2 comparison as that car had a slipping clutch which I believe held it back.
