Honestly....

When I lease a car for 3 years, I don't expect to have to replace the tires before the lease is up @ 36k miles and 36mos.

I have about 27k miles on my Pirelli Cinturato's and they were down to the wear-bar (4/32)

My wifes X5 is also a 3 year lease, she has 15k miles and about 5/32 left on her run flats...So we'll have to replace those too before lease end.

What the heck? Are we the only idiots replacing tires at the wear bar?

What happened to the days when tires lasted 30-40k or more?

Why arent I hearing more gnashing of teeth and wailing from other owners have to replace tires so soon??

Had 27k on my E89 Z4's RFT and had the minimum tread recommended by BMW on the back tires. They wanted me to replace them but told them that I'm returning it in a few months. The tires run down quick compared to others, it is the nature of the beast.

It's a 4k pound vehicle that's built to do 155mph on the autobahn. It's going to go through tires. If you want something that's easy on tires, SUV's aren't the best starting point.

You know you have to turn the car in with a minimum amount of tread remaining on the tires per your lease agreement, right?

No, we aren't.

The times haven't changed. They still make tires that last that long...the tires BMW chooses to use on most of their vehicles in the recent past just don't happen to be among them.

Because we were all prepared for this when we bought into this brand of car. For instance, I like grip. I buy Z-rated Max. Performance Summer Tires ALWAYS. I accept the fact that worn down at ~15K-20K miles is what I buy into. As others have said, run flats don't last long, so that's what you have to accept.

Reminds me of people complaining about having to use premium gas in a higher performance engine which requires it.

Yeah, not sure why you're complaining. I don't think I've had a set of tires for more than 20k in my lifetime. These are performance oriented cars with performance oriented tires (in many applications). Tires are a wear item. Just think of all the money you saved by not having to pay for oil changes every 3k miles anymore and put that toward the tires.

I picked up a used set with some meat left before turning in my car.

I had to change my RFTs on the X5M after 22,000KM!!! Dealer wanted to do it at 15k!

Never had a high performance tire with a low profile (55 or less) that lasted more than 20-22k. Non staggered ones I have had last 15-18k in the rear in cars with a lot of torque, even if gingerly driven by my wife.

You've done well at 27k miles.

There are plenty of tires that will last long. You'd have to switch to smaller wheel sizes and go with 65-75 profile, if your brakes allow you to downsize your wheels, otherwise the 80s sedan look.

I am still not of the mindset when I lease a vehicle for 3 short years, I'm going to have to replace the tires.

Seems like that is an outdated way of thinking in the world of run-flat, lower profile, all season tires.

Just another reason for me to go back to my real love of summer rubber vs winter tires - regardless of having Xdrive or not.

Having worked at a dealer, most people who have a 36 month lease expected to put on 2 sets. I even saw some people toss on some high mileage cheapos and just put the original runflats back on when they go to turn their lease in.

I've been driving MB and BMW's for over 18 years.

It aint my first rodeo and it is the first time we'll have to replace tires on both vehicles before lease end.

Like I said earlier, this is the last bmw I will own with all seasons...Summer vs Winter rubber for me from now on - and non friggin run-flats too.

Hmmmm..2 sets? Most people??

I can see that if they're running 19's+, maybe a track day here or there and a non suv.

I don't think your average X1,X3,X4, X5 or pedestrian 3 series buyer is expecting to buy two sets of tires during their 3 year lease..

The type of driving has significant effect. My Pilot Super Sports still have plenty of tread after 18k miles plus 1 track day, but I do a ton of highway driving.

I have brdgstn run flats on my 435i.. at 5 months and 14000 miles, with mostly highway driving, they are virtually bald... hope the MPSS non-run flats last at least 20k

14k miles and almost bald..

Again, I get it for higher performance, low profile applications like M cars, M Suv's and the like...I've owned 2 m3's and I sure as hell knew what I was getting into before plunking down $78k on my last E92..

But for the more pedestrian applications of say an 18" tire on X3 or X5? Or the soccer mommy driving her 328i?

Don't blame the industry: blame the consumer.

You think those 19" bling bling are less expensive to manufacture then reasonable 15/16" running gear? Who has driven the market towards the large vehicles people buy in droves
in the US vs. reasonably sized coupes and sedans? Even our 'sedans' have to look larger
with grand coupes and BMW's less then attractive GT series.

2500 lb cars can easily run 30K with good sticky tires (longer with rocks).

4500 lb monstrosities? Not so much.

I am with you on RFTs: the first few gens are not all that great with respect to ride quality but they continue to get better: engineers are pretty smart folks.

Final thought: tires are the most important thing on your car with respect to safety. Stopping in 10 feet less from 70 MPH is the difference between nothing and a new front end. There is no free lunch with that equation.

You want 50K donuts? Get a Prius.
