gas nozzle keeps shuting off , problem or not?
This is the third time in the last 6 months that I m putting gas in my car and the gas nozzle keeps shuting off. Last time it took me forever but I got it full.
Today I had the same problem , this time I wanted to see if it was the pump or my car so I went to the cashier and pay him 2 dollars ( which is how far I got) , I moved to the next pump and it was fine. My tank was almost full before I began putting gas but I was able to put 10 liters in it. Then another car went into the pump where I had the problem and it also clicked on and off him or maybe he was just going on and off , not sure but I highly doubt he would do that, but then he was pumping gas fine , maybe I should ve asked him if it did the samething... Anyone had this happened before ? , third time in 3 different gas stations over the last 6 months , I never had this happened in any of my cars before , is it the pump or my car ...?? I have a 2011 e90 328 |

It happens with some cars at some pumps. Next time it happens to you, turn the nozzle 180 degrees so it's upside down and hold it while it's filling. This usually works.

I ve read different theories so far , but I found one to be interesting , someone in a different forum suggested it usually happens after you been driving the car pretty hard and you try to put gas. I had my car in sports mode and I was driving somewhat hard before going to the gas station , coincidence ?? Im not sure ... here is the post "The cutoff valve is based on pressure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_di...fuel_dispenser) so if gas is splashing against the wall of the tank or if there are more fumes in the tank because of spirited driving or hot weather then the shutoff valve would be triggered faster/easier. Try pulling the nozzle up a bit so that the rubber seal won't close the tank entrance and allow for the fumes to go out faster and also prevent the back splash from the tank wall from reaching the tip of the nozzle." |

I disagree with that theory. In my experience, certain cars do it at certain pumps. If you take your car back to that same pump where it happened before, it will likely happen again. I used to drive a Ford Ranger work truck and it happened 100% of the time at our company gas pump. Other trucks were fine at that pump and the Ranger was fine at gas stations. For the record, it does happen to my 328 occasionally, too. Turning the nozzle upside down always works for me.

The auto shutoff is triggered by the vapor recovery system. There is a small hole in the side of the pump nozzle that pulls in air (and vapor). When the fuel reaches up to the point where that hole is covered the pressure differential increases (fluid is harder to suck than air) and that triggers the shutoff. This is also why it is dangerous to pump gas with the nozzle upside down.
This kind of thing can be caused by a restriction in your fuel neck which causes fuel to back up in the neck and trigger the shutoff. More likely, however, is you have a faulty or dirty pump.

Usually something to do with the pump not your car IMO

It's happened with my 335. This topic has been discussed in the past. I believe the consensus was it was a BMW problem. It has never happened to me with a different car.

This is the reason exactly. My wife's '12 Suburban does the same thing, and it had a recall due to the fuel neck to the tank being too small in diameter, causing it to repeatedly cause the shutoff. However, for it to start out of nowhere on yours means it could be something else backing it up possibly. Maybe just a shitty pump like others on here have said. |

Until it becomes a really commonplace problem, I wouldn't worry about it. It can happen on any car, depending on the gas nozzle. Easy enough to just switch pumps on the rare occasions it happens or turn the pump sideways or upside down. I have yet to have it happen on my 335, but it happens pretty frequently on my Infiniti FX. On those along with G35's which share most of the parts, there was actually a TSB for an issue w/ the fuel filler. I'm just too lazy to remove a bunch of stuff to replace the part since it's out of warranty and it only seems to happen on older gas pumps. Once I stopped going to certain gas stations, the problem is pretty much gone.

I read about this somewhere because my car occasionally did this and they said to take out the nozzle & resinsert it into the gas tank but this time do not insert it completely down the fuel tank. Everytime I did this method it worked for me. But mostly likely the gas nozzle is the problem not your car.

This happens to me too on my e90 and would also happen on my e46.
Usually if it happens I just pull the nozzle back about half and inch and it will make it work better.
