Trade in my 2011 328i xdrive for 2015 VW GTI speed

So I test drove the 2015 VW GTI today in stick - came away very impressed - it rides like a midsize car, feels truly like it's in the A4/3-series class with it's overall vault-like feel and the way the suspension soaks up bumps but provides great feel - the suspension is just about perfect overall, the shifter has a solid feel through the gates and is much easier to shift than my 3 series and though the steering is a tad light, its very precise and really good for an electrically assisted setup.

Why would I consider this car ? frankly I'm tired of the stiff clutch on my 328i and the rough shifts - I bought the car CPO about a year ago in excelent condition and thought I'd master very smooth shifts at a certain point but that moment never came - I do enjoy the car overall, but my main gripes are the heavy shifter that continues to make it challenging to shift smooth (even after I removed the CDV which did help a bit) and the bouncy suspension - I guess I can cure the suspension issue with coilovers but that'll set me back 2500 or so for KW v1 with installation and then from what i understand it'll introduce additional harshness again which I can't deal with after I got rid of the run flats and made the car better -

Am I crazy to compare these vehicles?? I'll miss the AWD on my BMW (and live in the Boston area) and I'll miss the great ride above about 70 miles an hour, but in everyday city driving, I'd rather have the GTI hand down - and the GTI really blew me away in how solid it was at high speeds as well...thoughts?? thanks everyone

Gti is a nice car but its not a bmw. Its like comparing an A4 to a gti or a altima 3.5 to a g37. If you dont care about the name / status then a gti is fine. I ve been in a couple of mk6 and they are fun to drive plus they can easily make a lot of power ..

In 2007, I cross shopped the GTI and the E91. VW's QC scared me off ("howls derisive laughter") and I purchased the E91.

I thought I read that a new AWD Golf R is about to be unveiled.

It's a different transmission. It's no long trans-axle. They moved from FWD -> AWD.

If you seek smooth shifts in your 6MT 328...

You need to do the CDV delete.

search for it, common thing among 6MT owners.
Its funny BMW feels they need to put a CDV on non-M cars, but all M cars do not have this and shift much better.

Ive driven stick all my life and the first time I got in my BMW I thought I was re-learning ... I've since have gotten used to it, and actually have not done the CDV-delete myself due to pure laziness, even though I still might IF I decide to keep my car long term.

GTI's are decent cars, but just reminds me of every high school kid... and, I am personally not a "V-DUB" fan. but nice little sporty cars for sure.

Isn't the golf R coming soon? you should wait for that!

I recently read about the new Audi rs3 hatch. If that comes to the states, I might actually consider it. If only it came in stick guise!

That's pretty funny.

If that's the car that makes you happy, trade in the 328! I remember driving a friend's manual jetta around all summer in 2008. I liked it.

What I absolutely hated was the interior. Everything peeled so easy, it drove me crazy.

OP go for it. Most people who drive BMW's do it for status. If your only concerned owning a car that puts a smile on your face then get the GTI. My Buddy got rid of his 335is for a GTI. His reason was that it was more engaging for a DD. Everyone brags bout the power you can make with the 335 but where the hell are you gonna drive it to actually enjoy those gains.

The thing that would hold me back from that trade is the FWD. For me RWD>AWD>FWD. FWD is just un-purchasable at this point. If you can't swing a new Golf R, what about a slightly used one? They are great cars and can also make good power quickly. Best of luck!

Has VW stopped dressing their interiors with Scottish kilts captured in WWI? I shopped VW a while ago, and that plaid cloth interior was a show-stopper for me.
