Periodic wiper failure

So, I have looked through the search and can't find anyone having the specific issue I am having so I would see if someone smarter than me has some advice for my 2006 e90:

- for last month wipers and washer work fine, but recently the wipers will stop (always in down position) and no matter what I do they won't start again.
- the temporary fix is to pull over, turn off car, pull key and restart. Then it works fine.
- While problem is going on, wipers won't work in auto or manual mode. And pulling the stalk for washer does nothing.
- this happened once a year ago and didn't do it again til now. Now happening daily.
- no dash warnings or errors.

Was thinking of replacing relay as its cheap but otherwise no real idea.

Have a code reader and will check for codes when I get home (just left town for Xmas).

Thanks all.

I'd start by replacing the relay -- as you said it's a cheap part that's prone to failure. It's kind of weird that the washer stops working at the same time but I wouldn't be too surprised if the wiper relay is part of that circuit as well.

It's the relay. I just replaced mine. Even once you put in a new relay you have to restart the car to get it to work again.

I put the new one in. Still didn't work. Restarted and all was well.

Thanks guys. But sorry - what do you mean by "restarting the car." All I can think is on and off but surely the car would be off when you replaced the relay? Do you mean in terms of ECU - i.e pulling battery for awhile? Would be helpful if you can clarify.

Thanks.

I lazily used mine to try to push a lot of heavy, wet snow off my windshield... they made it up and down once, stopped, and wouldn't move again. I had to shutdown/key out and restart twice before they started working again. I'm not sure if it was the 2x restart or just the elapsed time before they reset.

It was the only time I've had any wiper failure; I was pissed at myself and worried I had just burned them out, but they've been fine for a few weeks now. Lesson learned.
