2015 Z06 VIR *BLISTERING* Lap Time
Summary:
Lap Performed by Jim Mero (corvette driver and engineer for Chevrolet). 2015 Z06 Lap Time: 2:41.3 That is 4.3 seconds faster than his lap time in a ZR1 (for comparison purposes). C/D LL Porsche 918: 2:43.1 And as a reference, C/D LL C6 ZR1: 2:50.7 I estimate the C/D LL for the 2015 z06 to be between a 2:45 and 2:46 and possibly hitting < 2:44.5 with the automatic and a PERFECT lap since the 2015 z06 is easier to drive than a C6 ZR1 AND Jim Mero was driving a manual car which he also missed a shift in. People here will point out that these tests are on different days, different conditions and some with different driver (P918).
The bottom line is for track enthusiast is: the C7 Z06 is a very fast car as is. We now it has some issues, do not know how serious it is (ECU timing change) and if there is a OEM fix to it (they said NO so far) Anyway in my book all these cars and the Viper is approaching the too fast category where a track day turns into more work than fun. (plus any mistake and you may not just change the color of your underpants..) Personally I plan to test drive the Z06 and see... |

Honestly if people want to argue the different day/weather/driver thing then ALL of Car and Drivers tests don't mean anything, especially the "sacred" Nurbugring times everyone praises......but I never hear that argument....I wonder why....
This car is a beast, it stops great and handles better than ANY car on the road, ANY car. So let the haters hate because its just some lowsy RWD, S/C pushrod made by an American car company that was bailed out by the Government. But guess what? Its doing work on the road course to all of those other "pure track" cars and at a lower cost. The ECU thing sucks and GM needs to fix this but even then the car runs around the track and handles its own. The car has been doing very well on the road courses and so far none of the private owners have anything to complain about. The car is very composed and easy to push to its limits and bring back into line once it does get pushed too far. |

That said I still think something slower would be more fun. |

I think he was at Laguna Seca but I'm sure since it was a couple weeks or so I read about his experience. But another owner was at Road Atlanta and didn't see the ~290 oil temp that the other owner was seeing and I believe the temps for both places were slightly above 50F. We'll see how it fairs in the summer heat but so far....the car is doing outstanding. |

During owner's two day track event at Road Atlanta temps peaked at 257. He reported the guage in the dash was way off on the actual temp. 257 was pulled from PDR using Cosworth software. The Laguna Seca temps were from the guage, that owner didn't have PDR. So we never got the true temps. I am sure on hot summer days, serious track guys will upgrade cooling. As did some ZR1 owners.

With the symptoms people are referring to, you either get a tune or upgrade cooling... I think most track enthusiasts will upgrade cooling and keep engine/sw stock whereas most highway youtube racers will get a tune and complain if their engine blows up and blame chevy for not replacing it. |
