American Sniper
Has anyone seen it yet? I watched it over the weekend and here are some of my thoughts;
1) Very well put together movie that shows the psychological part of being a sniper very vividly and emotionally. This was the best part of the movie. 2) Other than the above, I am not really sure why this movie has Oscar nominations. The movie does the above very well but I think Jarhead and others did this better in many way. 3) The movie was far too long and many of the scenes seemed incredibly drawn out and boring. You could cut an hour of the movie out and it may have been more interesting. 4) I am questioning the accuracy of some parts. It was pretty obvious that Chris suffered from a serious case of PTSD and it showed in his family life. It was pretty obvious that he never received any help for it, the navy never put him in a quarantine after returning each time and the only time he sought help was seeing one old psychiatrist. I am not sure that's how it works or at least the military has protocols for this. What are your thoughts? I would give it a solid 6.5.

I'm not emotionally ready to see it yet. It's a crying shame how each nation will sacrifice their youth at the alter of war

I have to disagree. i thought the movie was excellent in every aspect. Bradley Cooper nailed it and so did Clint. You really think they could have cut an hour out of the movie? The movie wasn't even that long a lil more than 2 hours. I don't think putting redeployed soldiers in to quarantine is a thing, at least ive never heard of that. why would they military do that? the movie seemed to be pretty accurate. check out Chris Kyle's story.

They absolutely do go through testing/treatment. Reintegration processes can vary but usually last about a week. They are not quarantined though.
Post-deployment health assessments are usually ongoing for much longer. The doctors attempt to monitor the physical and mental health of these soldiers as much as possible, but they can't (and don't) catch everyone with an issue.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I will say there is usually a ton that Hollywood gets wrong whenever they do a military movie. A soldier standing in line to get behind a computer and enter some data is pretty boring, so I understand why they would omit reintegration Maybe his experience was different since he was a SEAL. I don't know for sure.

*** SPOILER ALERT ****
Just to ensure everyone is aware...Chris Kyle is now dead. I assume you were all aware of this. Ironically perhaps he was shot in the back by another soldier who was "suffering" from PTSD. Last edited by Joekerr; 01-19-2015 at 04:47 PM.. |

My bad - I just saw a news article on this dated 20 hours ago...and I assumed his death was recent. Which is why I was surprised it was in the movie lol.

I thought it was a good movie. To be able to hit someone from 1 mile away is an amazing feat, whether it was luck or skill.
Sad to hear about how he went out...may he RIP.

Chris died Feb 2 2014 so no need for a spoiler alert. It was all over the news. No quarantine for Soldiers (unless they are coming back from Ebola mission). They portrayed Iraq pretty accurately. I have been deployed to middle east over 7 times so I can say that it was an amazing movie.

Watched the movie.
Few good Few bad. Definitely worth borrowing DVD. That long distance he was shooting with 22X max mag at that distance they specify, ............... (no comment). I love how the Official Trailer has scopes mixed up. 0:11 - Leupold MK4 scope 0:20- Nightforce NXS scope (it is just a movie...)

The movie has been bringing out many bigoted comments on Twitter. The fact is, the man that was portrayed in the movie has made statements like "I couldn’t give a flying fuck about the Iraqis." and bragged about shooting looters after Katrina in NOLA. For those reasons, I'll pass on supporting the movie.

Yea, some call it "murder"
When you kill so many ppl (yea I know its war and you're doing your job)...it'll come to you soon or later. Now since this is Merica, you become a hero or can I say that they'll make it to a Heroic story

I agree. The movie was pretty good but over hyped. Cooper's performance was good. But I thought the actress that played his wife did a great job. Sad how he died but his "character" was unlikeable to a certain extent.
