I thought TPMS starts in 08 for Canada.

I'd hold off on that one. There are reports of some that come with TPMS and some that don't.
I am wainting to get my VIN 'cause I need to know for the Morr GB. Last edited by sparkyg; 01-24-2008 at 11:12 AM.. |

I have a reliable info source that told me that in 2009 Canada will have the same regulation than USA WRT TPMS. This means all new BMW sold in Canada will have to have the TPMS sensors like the US ones. The 2008 5 series have them and I was told some 2008 E9X have them and others don't. I am also waiting for my VIN. If I need them I will need to buy 2 sets (winter and summer) as I will leave my stock 162 tire/rim setup alone. I hope I don't need them.
If you already have your car you can verify if you have the TPMS sensors by looking at your valve stem. If they are aluminum, you have them. One more point. If you do have the TPMS sensors consider filling your tires with nitrogen instead of regular air as it is much less humid and prevent TPMS components, rim and metal part of the tire corrosion.

Since I am lazy and dislike checking tire pressures except for when the season changes, if I put TPMS in my wheels, will I-Drive pick them up and display them for me, or do I need a reflash?

A quick search of the forums for TPMS will give you a number of threads where this has been explained to death. US spec cars are required by law since 2002 to have tire pressure monitoring sensors -- these look like metal valve stems. Canadian spec 3 series cars do NOT use these -- our cars use the ABS system to indirectly measure whether or not a tire has lost pressure. This also means that it is highly unlikely that a flash of your iDrive will allow your car to read them.
I went through this when I ordered my winters from Tire Rack (who I highly recommend) -- they refunded me 1/2 the price of the sensors on my car, which are pretty but otherwise useless... |

In November, having just switched over to winter tires, an alert sounded on iDrive, telling me my vehicle was low on air.
Soon after, it informed me I had a flat tire. Problem is, it didn't say which one (although it doesn't take a brain surgeon to step out of the car and figure it out). So while there isn't TPMS, there is a system based (probably) on tire rotation. |

I drove a Chevy Colbalt rental car and it told me the exact pressures in each individual tire. That is what I was looking to do by adding them to my car.

The info that my sales rep gave me in regards to TPMS is that they have been problematic (cold weather) and do not use them. Instead the wheel/tire diameter is what would give you a message for a low tire pressure warning.
Have not validated this info but it's what I was told.

Does your car come with 19" OEM wheels? Those wheels come with TPMS but they just sit idle becasue the car still uses FTM, doesn't pick up or process TPMS signals.

probably a retarded question but i'm sure someone is thinking the same: can we visually spot the TPMS sensors without having to jack our car up?

This is the picture of a 19" wheel with non-functioning TPMS from Kalch's first E93 a.k.a. 2007 Autoshow Special. Note the extra thick metal valve stem. Even wih TPMS sensors in the wheels, the car still uses FTM.

I had to ask the tech's at parkview BMW regarding this issue,
since my CA had no clue what the hell I was even talking about. (It's just sad that people that are selling you a $60k vehicle doesn't even know jack sh*t about the their own products ) I heard that all 08's that are made after Nov (Dec, Jan etc..) production will have the TPMS. Hence those who picked up the early 08 models will not have a TPMS. Well. that's what the tech told me but who knows p.s I was also told that if you have an aluminum valve, it doesn't mean that you have a TPMS! Last edited by ojungoon; 01-27-2008 at 04:00 PM..
