1, 3, 5, 6, 7, X1, X3, X5, X6, Z4, M, CS - is it getting hot in here?

with all new and upcoming BMW models, it seems like their line-up is getting really overcrowded. or is it just me? especially with all the submodels, our 3ers are soon going to become as exclusive as corollas.

on one hand, i'm really excited to see new models rolling out of germany. however, on the other hand, the continuing recession of exclusivity isn't very pleasing. it also puts the brand that much closer to mercedes who will soon run out of letters in the alphabet.

i was also thinking about this in terms of ferrari. they have as many models as there are stars in the skies. due to their price tags, performance, brand recognition and quality, it really makes no difference for them. BMW doesn't have that kind of resume, not even close to it.

is BMW the next Ford or can it keep its good reputation with each new model appearing on the road? what do you think?

I completely agree with you. BMW's trying to find too many niche markets that no one will probably want to follow.

The X6, PAS, and e91 seem to serve way too similar of a purpose.

Hopefully the madness will stop soon.

And yeah, I really hope the 3 doesn't become the next corolla (in places outside of CA that is).

I look at it this way, there are only really 8 models (9 with X6). Amongst those models is a break down of the different levels if you will (_28, _30, _45 etc).

BMW is merely offering more customization for their customer base. As for exclusivity, here in DC for example BMW isnt that exclusive, much less a 3er. However, a specific level can be exclusive. So 335 owners have their small group and 645 owners have their smaller group.

BMW is still one of the very few fully owned car companies. So for your example, Ford, I consider Jag, Aston, Volvo all Ford...then you have Mercury and Lincoln. So does BMW have a wide array of specific model levels, maybe, but no where near any other car company.

Lastly, as much as I love it and really really really want one, I too though can agree that the X6 serves really no purpose in the line up. If they bring back the 8er, 2002, and Isetta, then yes that might be a bit much.

good point... at least my 3 isn't the platform they developed other cars on. Jeep Compass drivers might as well say they drive a dodge calibur.

BMW is obtainable however, so your going to see a couple... especially in wealthier areas

Hah, time will only tell, but one thing I can say is that list you posted up there is small compared to what it really will be, there will be other cars such as the X1, PAS, PAV and more to come.. its going to make MB's hunt for niche markets look weak. Well, I have faith in BMW to make some seriously good machines. I mean, look at what a beast the X6 turned out to be.

Past history has shown that a car manufacturer sales in one year increase with the number of new model they offer that same year.

^LOL I was about to say "quick, someone list Benz's line up".

I do agree on too many SUV's for BMW though. The X3 and X5 were fine with me..a smaller SUV and a bigger one. They should've kept the X6 as a completely remodeled X5.

I can understand the 1 series since the 3 series is not that small anymore.

The original list also only shows the US models available - BMW offers more variations in Europe. And if we're lumping all the Ford-owned marques together, shouldn't we be including Rolls-Royce and MINI models?

There's nothing too out of the ordinary in BMW's line up besides the X6 and upcoming PAS or whatever.

I appreciate the X6, bringing high performance and style to the SUV market, but the PAS? WTF?

BMW is definitely on a nutty model offensive!

Oh well! Keeps things very interesting!

In particular, I'm looking forward to the X1 SAV and new 8 Series (CS). Not too sure about the V5. Also, the next-generation 5 Series will probably be amazing!

I agree somewhat espically being in sales. The thing is that BMW feels that other car manufactures have a product that BMW does not have a comparable car to. They realize they should make more money if they have something to compete with other cars they normally dont compete with. Look at all the engine choices and models in Europe and you will see we have a lot less choice then they do.

Some of the cars they have also are not cars they sell a ton of. The X6 will be one of those cars. Its a special market for that car therfore BMW will produce less knowing this and at the same time turn a profit. They wont make the mistake Mercedes did and make way too many R-Classes. The Z4 also falls under this catergorie of a specialty car. Really they only added the 1series and the X6 which is not a lot of new cars espically since they wont sell more than a few thousand X6's.

Customers looking at a Cayenne will be the customers that look at x6 mostly if I had to guess. Just like Porsche they have an entry level 6cyl and a high performance V8. Within the next year or so we will see the X6 to compare with the Cayenne turbo as well. That SAV will have 500+hp because BMW wants to offer the most powerfull SUV type vehicle ever.

Since when is a 3er an exclusive car? Around Boston, they already seem about as common as Corollas.

i agree. at some point they'll have to end some lineups... but i'm not sure where they'd even start cause at this point it seems that all models have a pretty good niche in today's market. it seems like the trend is the vehicles are becoming more expensive, larger/heavier...as well... like we see the 1 series filling the gap between mini and the 3 series because the 3 series increased in cost and size... so im wondering if the general trend is larger and more expensive... where does the addition end...

+10 They are nothing special around here either, that was THE main deterrent for me.

i don't think 3ers are at all exclusive cars. i still wouldn't put them in the same category as corollolas (in terms of exclusivity). *yet!* and that's the whole point of this thread.

I actually do believe that BMWs are still exclusive. Those that live in CA, NJ, or NY probably don't have a good grasp on what the "real" world's really like. Bimmers aren't all that common depending on where you live.

Actually, Bimmers are common in a lot of areas. Mainly the more affordable 3 series, new and used.
