Need advice with wastegate rattle
For the past 18 months I've had the dreaded wastegate rattle. It keeps getting worse. I'm to the point where it's actually embarrassing to drive the car since it sounds like its about to fall apart.
I've taken it to the dealership 3 times and asked them to replace the turbos. I'm at 65k miles and its a 2008 so I'm coming up on the 8yr warranty expiration. They keep telling me "unless it triggers a code BMWNA won't authorize replacement". Has anyone else had this experience and if so, what did you do to convince the dealer to replace them? |

You could always reach down there and grab the wastegate on the back turbo and basically yank/pull the shit out of it forcing it to break, IDK about the front one.

Before you replace turbos try new boost solenoids.
I bought RBs and still had a rattle until i bought new solenoids. I was still making high psi and on target but had bad rattle on acceleration and deceleration. |

The dealer should replace your wastegates at the very least if you have rattle. It would have to be present as the revs fall from like 3k after giving gas is neutral. Look up the service billetin on wg rattle and use similar language as in the bulletin to describe the symptoms. Then make sure the noises are easily reproducible. If these conditions are met they must T the very least replace your wg per the extended 82k wg warranty.
Problem is they will rAttle again -I'm on my 3rd set of wg at 120k and the noise is back. It shouldn't affect performance although it sounds like the car is broken. Many people on the forum are luck and had their turbos replaced too. You may want to just try another dealer.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no needed fault code for turbo replacement authorization. The SIB which outlines the extended warranty does not mention any faults, only noises. Sadly, it seems its almost up to the specific dealer whether or not to replace turbos. I know that dealer's do not need authorization from TC/PUMA to replace them anymore. BMW knows that the turbos are faulty and even the new replacements are already faulty lol.

I have the same thing and I'm heading to dealer now . This topic scared me but as far as I know the only reason they extended the warranty is the part or the design is 100% BMW fault. So If you go to a different dealer they will replace it ...

Turbo Replacement
I drive an 08' 335i and just had the turbos replaced about 4 months ago (under warranty). I had zero codes thrown. Like someone said earlier, they look for SOUND and will take your car for a test drive to determine the course of action. I told them it rattled bad on de-acceleration! If one turbo needs replaced they will do both

Car is getting new snails
Success! I took my car back to the same dealer and went over the service announcement where it talks about the sound. They totally agreed with me and decided its now time to get the new turbos.
My car should be back in my hands next week! |

Dropped my car off at the dealer for this yesterday....08 335xi with 63k miles. Rattles under any throttle and when letting rpms fall from anything other than idle. Did not buy my car from a BMW dealer...Should have results today.
Side note I miss my car...this 2015 320xdrive auto thing is really boring and basic. |

Most likely if this is the case the noise/condition is not that bad. You might have to convince stealership to get the job done

Do any of you guys getting your turbo's replaced have downpipes? Im thinking that if i bring mine in with downpipes they will immediately just decline it.
