Does Cobb increase water pump speeds with their tune?
Anyone know? I've now had TWO N54 engine cars, both Cobb tuned, have their water pumps crap out, in fairly early mileage I'd say.
First, my 2008 335 with only 35,000 miles on it, which is Stage 2+ and has been Cobb tuned for the last 20,000 miles (and before that, 10,000 were on a Procede stage 1). And now, my 2010 535, which has 50,000 miles on it (the last 30,000 of which have been Cobb stage 1 tuned). I thought they usually last up to at least 70 or 80,000 miles? WTF? I know some tunes, like the Dinan flash, turn up the water pump's speed to assist in cooling, and perhaps that leads to premature deaths on these things? Though you wonder how much impact it would have even if it works like Dinan's, since it's supposed to be only with increased boost, and with mainly city driving, it's not like you're in 15 PSI of boost all the time... |

This can't be a coincidence. My water pump crapped out too at about 50k on the odometer within a month on stg 2+.

There are many people who are not tuned who have had their water pumps go around the same mileage as you guys. I ran my Cobb tune for almost 45k miles before it finally went out at around 82k miles.

My pump took a dump at ~84K, about 1 month before going to Cobb. Perhaps other than a slight amount of additional heat, I don't see how a failing pump could be related to the Cobb.

PS Did all of you buy OEM pumps? I bought my kit from ECS Tuning, and as of a few months ago when I bought my first pump, I swear that only BMW pumps were available. But I just noticed that I ended up with a German made water pump by some company called Vemo, so I hope it's as good as the BMW pumps... Had never heard of this brand. Anyone?

With the first one I bought for my 335 a few months ago, I'm pretty sure it came with a BMW pump, which was part of their "assembled by ECS" kit (it had the Mahle Behr thermostat in it and you would save $40 vs. getting the BMW thermostat).
But with this latest kit I bought, since only a few months had passed, I presumed it also came with the OEM pump, so I didn't check the detailed kit contents. The pump that came with this kit is the Vemo brand. So I hope it is a solid, quality pump, which ECS claims it is - hence why they put it in their "kit". Since my car is down, I didn't want to bother returning it to get the OEM pump. I've never heard of this brand. Have you? |

I am JB4 tuned… My water pump popped at 75k and had a new oem one installed in Oct2014… 3k miles later and it had a massive crack in it pissing water all over the place…
I hope it is just a faulty pump and not tune related…. I take it JB4 doesn't increase water pump performance to accommodate for increased boost? |
