Drove my LS1 M6 to work today

02 Z28 M6 w/ 44k - I've owned it for six years.

60 mile round trip - Metro Atlanta

What a great powertrain...simple, fuel efficient, effective as hell!!!

T56 gear ratios w/ 3.42 rears laughs at the notion of rev matching.

.50 sixth gear...1900 RPM at 79mph

26MPG

How this is BMW related:

The drive got me thinking...

WTF is so hard about building a reliable V8 power?

I did cam and heads ( in my garage) on my C5 back in 2005 that made 404RWHP. MTI Racing did the tune in Marietta GA. The guy I sold it to still drives it today...he has never had to go back into motor. I did the H&C at 64K, it has 172K on it now.

I currently own two BMW's: a 2011 X3 and a 2006 330i M6 w/ sport, and will continue to own the brand.

I bought a new cosmos black 1995 M3, and I've built a pro-touring Chevelle.

I am in the automotive biz, but still enjoy it as a hobby...my build is my build dammit!!!

If the 550I / 545I had half of the LSX's attributes I would own one!!!

Do any of you also think BMW is missing the boat here?

Google: LS1 E36 M3

Thoughts???

I love those cars, my buddy has an 02 WS6 6MT with 36K miles H/C FBO.

But that's really a 5 speed with a super over drive 6th gear.
Your average gas mileage will be no where near the 26mpg you get on the freeway unless you're driving it on trip somewhere.

LS1 is getting a bit long in the tooth also as for as making power.
Without FI/bottle you're maxed out at 450whp and it's not cheap to add heads/cams/FBO/clutch to get it to 450whp.

Drivetrain feels like 1990 still from a feel prospective, its strong and makes good power but man it "feels" old school.

Nothing is hard about it. They just want to push fuel efficiency and lower emissions. Easier to do with turbos than displacement. Personally I prefer displacement and laugh at climate change. But that's another thread.

I must admit, I was so confused by the title.

For a moment, I genuinely thought OP had an M6 with an LS1 swapped engine.

I suppose I'm a little too young, as I've never seen someone refer to a 6-speed Manual specifically as an M6.

Chevelles were cars. The silver car is a shiny Chevelle. The red car is a Camaro...it is shiny too. Chevelles had carburetors that mixed fuel and air by witchcraft!!! Very dangerous...fire make hot.

I know a decent amount about modern cars, but I'm by no means tech-savvy or intricately know all of the workings of an engine in detail.

What would be the modern equivalent of a carburetor?

Carbs:

Fuel hits bowl, mechanical linkage actuates a diaphragm(accelerator pump) that squirts fuel out of jets into carb as throttle plates are opening. Timing and metering this is key. Fuel is then metered by rod or spring loaded check / ball valves at throttle position to hold engine speed. Needle valves and seats control fuel bowl level.

Sacrificing unblemished sheep also help this process.
