So my short errand got pretty exciting....
On the way to pick up some take out I ordered for dinner, I got to be part of a high speed chase. I just turn on to this road and I see police lights in the distance. As I start closing the distance, I see a sport bike come up behind a car in the oncoming lane and proceed to pass this car across the double yellow. So the cop is chasing the guy on the bike. I pull over to the side of the road and stop. Bike blows by me at I guess 60 MPH in a 30 MPH residential zone. Cop goes flying by. I proceed on.
As I get close to the restaurant, I come up on two kids on bicycles. The one kid is starting to turn into a side street. The other kid sees me and then proceeds to move all the way over to the middle of the road. He's looking back at me like he wants to play chicken with me. WTF. Then he turns off to the side street after his friend. When he turns off, I notice his rear wheel is all bent to hell as it was wobbling all over the place. On the way back from the restaurant, I turn on the street that the police chase happened on and notice there is a new speed camera. Not sure if the bike blew by it or if the camera is even operational. If it's yes to both, that biker isn't going to get too far. So on what should have been a boring drive to pick up some take out, turned into witnessing a couple of Darwin candidates in action. |

Ugh, a speed camera?
Benelli M4 does the trick. We stopped paying that crap here in STL, they've removed all the cameras. Get a ticket, don't pay it. When nobody pays and tells them to go get bent, the nanny state goes away. Win. |

I agree in general with you about the speed cameras but if you take out the revenue part of why many of these cameras are being used, I do feel there are some cases where it makes sense to have them. School zones for one and I sort of agree with where this camera I saw today is placed. I think most places in Maryland state if you're 12 MPH over the limit, you're going to get a ticket. I think that's pretty reasonable.
Now contrast this with DC where they will not tell you how much over you have to be before getting a ticket. If you look at their fine schedule, you can technically get a ticket for being 1 MPH over the limit. |

All that and no info about the takeout? Anything good? (I've got the munchies if you couldn't guess.)

Then I cordially invite you to LA... At least once a year, I pass by one dude with 8 cop cars behind him, have choppers light up near me in search of someone else, and even just 3 weeks ago the chase below passed by me and a buddy when we were having phở at a nearby restaurant in Glendale.

Fucking hell, the whole road is full of animals and those are the best traffic cops. Why the fuck do we need the damn cameras too?! enjoy the weather, we are having an epic heat wave here and these 35C days are killing me completely. We went to the track today with some friends to watch guys go fast and I was supposed to go out in an hour again to feed a car some gravel, but this heat is the doom of social life. Good to see you Monaco!

Saatana. What pisses me off the most is that that road is the most boring drive ever. I had to do that bit often back in the day. The only thing interesting were the muscle police, deer. I would have more to say but nothing positive this time around. I'm bloody hell melting here. This is not the weather for our kind.

Thot you were gonna get involved in the chase, show the M3's prowess and conduct a citizen's arrest!
Seriously, you never know how you can unwittingly get caught in the urban warfare crossfire! |

Quick question: high speed chase for kids on bicycles? Or do you mean motorbikes?
Also screw the speed cameras. A lot are put up by private companies who hope you will just pay the fine but legally they're basically unenforcable. |

Good point. Some of the speed cameras have the actual camera mounted pretty high. Not sure if it's high enough to see on top of a bent license plate.

For those saying to F' a ticket generated by a speed camera, good luck with doing that here in the DC metro area. While the cameras can be contracted out to a company for up keep and maintenance, the pictures captured are reviewed by a police officer in the jurisdiction the violation occurred. The violation is issued by the local municipality and not by the contracting firm. If you don't pay, the fines double and if you still don't pay after the fines double, the municipality can prevent you from renewing your vehicle's registration. This can also occur with an out of state violation. So if you get a photo speed ticket from DC and you're from Maryland. The two jurisdictions have reciprocity and DC will report this to the Maryland MVA.

Most important question, what did you get for dinner? It's almost 5pm and I'm debating what I want for dinner

I love how it got so bad in AZ, that a judge started systematically dismissing speeding tickets issued by their cameras. I blew past one back in 2010 in PHX on the Auga Fria doing 30 over the speed limit on the way back from Vegas. I made sure they got a GOOD look at my middle finger when I did it. Never heard anything from it...had background checks SEVERAL times for jobs since then...no warrants, nothing.

I'm not sure how things are in other states with photo enforcement. But in the DC Metro area the violations issued are just civil offenses that wouldn't generate a warrant. The remedy as I mentioned above is to encourage payment of the fines by denying any renewal of the vehicle registration until the fine(s) are paid off. I also would think the relevancy of unpaid photo enforcement tickets would depend on what the background checks are for. If the background checks are done for a high level security clearance, I would assume non payment of fines could cause problems with the adjudication of your clearance application. |
