Transmisison Service

Hey guys

Anyone got it done? My E90 is about 100,000k now and I have been looking around to get a oil change done for the tranny. I have done it on my old X5 and thought that I should do the same for the E90. I think from memory the dealership charged me around ~$700 to get it done for my E53 X5. I'm thinking to get it done at a transmission shop this time.

For those who has got it done
Where did u do it?
How much did it cost?

There is a lot of debate out there that some people think it is not require as per the dealership. But a lot of people still do it as ZF themselves said it should be done 60-80,000ks.

It's an easy task for a bmw independent mechanic to perform!

I just ordered the parts required this morning, I plan on doing it myself.

The oil cost $80 and the transmission pan with filter cost $126. Hopefully my car still runs after this weekend!

I'm not sure if the 330d has the same mechatronic sleeve issues as the 335i, do a search to see if you should replace it whist you have the pan dropped.

I was worried about doing it too but I've done the DSG on my golf in the past and this seems very similar so thought I'd give it a go

I also heard that transmission oil change is not needed.
even saw an article saying that potential damage to the transmission system due to air going in?
I would really want to know how many of the members here have done it?

With most AT's you need to flush them via a pump to remove all of the old fluid, by draining what's in the tranny wont be fully effective (compared to a flush by a tranny specialist or indy) as you'll still have a few litres floating around in the torque convertor and if you have one tranny cooler etc.

Changed drained and serviced my tranny once, was put back together wrong and ended up with a full transmission rebuild for my trouble... not that I'm suggesting this will happen to you

Is the transmission oil change really needed?

OMG... I will end up breaking it I think. I thought the oil was a few hundred. BMW quoted me $500 for just the oil. Aparently the tranny takes quite a bit of oil.

I wonder if this is why I had the leak last month. The dealership changed the gasket near the transmission. Later on, they found some another leak which I waited 2 weeks for parts.

Was it recommended by VW to get the DSG service or did VW said not to touch it?

That is the argument that the dealership told me. Dont touch it coz if put more than require oil in, u can also cause more bad than good. Usually they said that they measure the same amount of oil that was drain and replace the exact amount.

Dealership told me it is not a bad thing having some old oil in there as complete new oil could cause too much shock to the transmission.

VW recommend servicing the DSG not sure of the service interval but it's quite long I think 60,000kms or something.

Changed the oil over the weekend and definitely a big improvement, no longer jolts when upshifting under load

Mine jolts too when decelerating. I think it is when it down gears from 2nd to 1st gear once car stops completely.

I'm hoping to get it done sometime next week. Hopefully I will also see the improvement similar to urs.

You'll need to replace the transmission oil pan when replacing the fluid. The pan has a built in oil filter that can't be replaced separately, BMW will quote you $500 for the pan, but you can get it from overseas for about $200 and it's genuine. I like to do things right, you can't put in fresh fluid on a dirty filter.

When I had my 2006 auto E90 325i I did a transmission service at home by myself, there are plenty of DIY on this forums for this job (you'll need a thermometer for this job btw).

I replaced:

1- Transmission fluid (used about 8.5L of the 10L I initially bought from BMW)
2- Tranny oil pan including built in tranny oil filter and the gasket (about $200 from turner motorsport)
3- electric connector rubber sleeve (cost $15 and known to leak, so might as well do it)
4- I also replaced all the bolts that hold the oil pan in place, BMW advises to replace them (came free with my oil pan)

I did it mostly for preventive maintenance, straight after servicing my transmission the shifts were a bit faster and smoother, other than that no real performance advantage doing this job.

P.s. A year later I sold my car and now I drive a 6 speed manual which I am planning to service its transmission soon. I think for the manual, only fluid needs replacing. No pan or filters required for the getrag 6mt box afaik.

If you take it to a shop to do the job, make sure they don't charge you more than 2 hours of labour max.

Booked for service next Tuesday with Tran tech on Monte St slacks creek. RACQ approved repairer, owner is Gary. He mention that transmission should be serviced at 90,000ks for first service and 40-50k afterwards.

$550 all inclusive in GST. Change oil, inc gasket, oil filter so I thought it was quite reasonable. I asked him to check the transmission repair done by Brisbane BMW and also the jolt from 2nd to 1st gear.

Will let u guys know how it all went down next week.

I'm surprised your car hasn't development a dreaded leak at 100k km, mine developed a leak at just 65k so I had them do the entire flush while they replaced all the bits and pieces.
