My transmission seems so sloppy! I have the Alpina flash but still seems pretty ridiculous.

Yes, D mode on the Alpina flash is absurd.. Manual is another story tho.

That's normal for Alpina flash in D mode.

+1. There is another pre-production Alpina flash that improves D behavior a bit over the standard one, and mitigates some of the light throttle upshift/downshift surging on S and M modes.

my alpina flash did the same on my stock trans and still does it on my level 10 trans. it did it on my friends stock 6at as well. basically, when you are very lightfooted, it upshifts as soon as possible around 1600 rpms. super early.

then when you are medium footed, it feels like it hangs the rpms up as it shifts through gears trying to find the correct one.

manual mode is perfect though.

ive adapted over the last 3 years to either driving the car all out in manual mode when racing, or when just cruising, leaving it in D and driving very lightfooted. i avoid the middle-upper driving style when in d altogether.

US seatbelt culture is so strange to me. Not wearing a seatbelt in Australia has been highly illegal all my life and all my parents' life from when they were very young children. I wouldn't even go 20m up the street to do a u-turn without putting it on. It's 3 demerit points and $300 fine here and it's pretty much unheard of for people to not wear seatbelts. Not having g a stab, just an interesting observation.

Not sure what you mean. Seatbelt tickets in my state are expensive and I dont know one person who doesnt wear a seatbelt out of habit, its been ingrained into us as children.

One person on this forum doesnt represent all of America.

OK no worries. I knew seatbelt rules were pretty different between states. Wasn't sure how different.

I've noticed my transmission shifts better when I have my seat belt on. No, not really, but was just trying to bring the thread back to where it should be. Transmission shifts, not seat belts.

When I ran Alpina on a generic Cobb flash I had that same exact odd shifting behavior. What will really help to fix that is to modify your throttle mapping which are referred to as requested torque or torque request depending on what device you tune with. I'm using these settings: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...&postcount=278

Thanks to trebila for sharing these.

However I've actually now moved away from Alpina (I tried both the older and new ones) and am using the "US sport" flash which is 7601494. D mode is way better than Alpina - stock shift points and more eager to downshift but still faster and crisper shifting than stock. And I think S and M modes are every bit as good as Alpina. I think everyone that doesn't like Alpina D mode should try out 7601494.

Is the 7601494 the early production alpina? or completely different flash?

Its not the early production Alpina. Its different. I see it referenced as a "US sport" flash in various forums. I think I read somewhere that its what's installed on the Z4 but I don't know if that's confirmed. You lose the gear indicator in D mode but S mode does give you S1, S2, etc. and M mode gives you M1, M2, etc. The S mode actually holds RPMs even longer than Alpina (holds to around 3,000 RPMs). So that tells me it is definitely intended to be a "sportier flash". If you have a cable an Winkfp properly setup its pretty easy to flash it on your car and test it out. Its the same exact method as flashing Alpina but obviously you just use the 760194 Zusb #.

Kind of interesting development for people who also have JB4 and Alpina flash. v31 firmware is out with a new menu 11, variable throttle mapping. It maps pedal/throttle to boost in a linear manner.

Short version is, I've been running it couple of days, and set at 1000 (0 to 5000 rpm is the range), almost all of the lagging luggy feel of D mode is gone. No more push the pedal 50% and wait forever. It still shifts up at 1800 rpm or so and you're in 6th by 40 MPH at light throttle. But now you can blow all that out and either accel right away (from low rpm) or get it to kick down at will, with much less input to the pedal than before. Response is immediate.

I urge anyone with JB4 to try it. I SUSPECT what may be part of the issue with D mode on the Alpina is the Alpina ECU software that would have been in place in a real B3 had somewhat different pedal-throttle mapping, and without it D mode is painful.

Anyway the change in the cars behavior is astonishing, not just D mode. Boost comes on hard and fast, in S or M mode. For example I hardly ever tried to accelerate hard in 5th M-mode, had to get way into the pedal, wait a bit, and then it would lurch forward, very hard to modulate. But now you feel accel right at the first push on the pedal, smooth and progressive. Like a car with a big giant NA motor and tons of TQ.

Give it a shot. Firmware download and discussion is over on the N54tech site, on the usual sticky at the top. The other totally cool thing is this is a steering wheel menu item. So you can mess around with the settings on the fly.

Alpina D mode is HORRIBLE!
I know it's meant for eco driving but it shifts so early and it does it quick. Even if I'm on the pedal the car is like SHIFT, SHIFT, SHIFT 6th gear and it's over lol

DS is awesome but I wish there was a middle ground.

When I let people drive my car I have them put it on DS mode or else they won't get a good experience

I usually have to downshift using shift paddles because if u just give some throttle my car will hit like 15psi at like 3rpm and I don't like torturing my car like that.

There is a trick ppl don't know, if u blip the throttle real quick you can downshift

Yes and no. Lots of people around here (WI) don't wear seatbelts and its only a 10$ ticket so no big deal. I wear it mainly when im messing around or driving aggressively.
