The B58 in the new 2016 340i is factory rated at 320HP and 330 ft lb torque - which is the same as the N55B30O0 in the current M235i.
With the M2 coming out, I'm not sure why BMW would need to put a more powerful B58 in the 2er than they're putting into the rest of their product line-up.

I might actually choose the M240i over the M2 as a daily for more than just the AWD for where I live. The B58 has a liquid-air IC upgrade and more solid block than the N55. More power, more boost, lower temps, ohh the possibilities.

I JUST placed an order for a '16 M235i. It's actually finishing production tomorrow.

They're not going to switch to the B58 mid-model year, correct? The earliest we'll see an M240i hitting the streets would be next summer as a '17 model?

Just for a question to those in the know. While aty MINI dealer yesterday, we were talking about the different 2.0 engines. BME vs MINI 2.0. He claims that BMW is having problems with the 2-3-4 series of 2.0 heads. They're having severe cracking, thought to be caused by too much boost. Had znyone here heard about this? Or is this MINI trying to keep my business?

I haven't seen any concrete evidence as to when the M240i will be available. I prefer having the N55 engine for now, it is well sorted out. The B58 has yet to prove its reliability, maybe it will be perfect, maybe not. In any case, at least there is the 340i to test it out for a bit before the M240i comes along. Since the M2 is going to be using the N55, I doubt that the M240i will come along for at least a few years, it would give the M2 even more competition, that is just my guess.

While I don't think they'll hesitate to stuff the new modular into the 2 series next year, I can't see it getting much of a power bump with the M2 coming in at 365 hp.

I debated waiting before I ordered my 2016, but the only thing I think the updated 2er is likely to have that I wanted would be the rev-matching manual transmission that the 340i gets, and even then, it wouldn't be a huge surprise if they held off to widen the gulf between the 2 and 3 series (and the 2 and M2 if it comes so equipped).

I've heard about these issues, but in every case I've read about the engines were modified well beyond stock levels.

AFAIK, the 2.0 engine has been pretty reliable.

Some of you forget that the 135is and the 1M had the same hp so why wouldn't they upgrade to 335hp. The M235 series is BMW's entry into performance and all their competitors have upped their hp. That still puts it 30 hp below the M2 and without the over boost feature. The 2017 model year is when all BMW's get the B series engine, 3 series and 7 got it for 2016 and 5 series gets it the for 2017 when its all new. The M performance line will all have more hp than the standard B series engines. A new X4 M40 is coming and it will have the same 335hp B series engine.

That was pretty much what I was thinking too. From what I've heard, these 2.0 motors are pretty tough and can take to over 330 hp without much trouble. But of course, if people get a little crazy, bigger turbo plus the usual computor upgrades, the pressure might get s bit much, but they'd have to really abuse the motor too. Just my opinion though. I still don't think there's much of a difference between the MINI JCW 2.0 and the 228i motor.
