Talking Just purchased 2007, e90XI long term build ??'s

Hi all. New to forums, I've been trying to read a lot of the older threads but still had a few questions. Just purchased a 2007 335xi, with 105k miles. Got a great deal out the door at $10k. Car has a clean history and only one owner previous who traded it in and used it as a commuter car. My long term plan is to be preventative, so I'm thinking oil cooler is a must, and then bolt on mods and long term if and when the engine goes doing a rebuild. For modding an older car with higher miles I was wondering what items you guys would recommend first besides an oil cooler? Upgraded radiator anything else that will help with longevity of a higher mileage car? Also I need this car to pass emissions so it'll be a street build, not going with cat less dps etc. I'm willing to do just about anything and everything reasonable to invest in making the current motor last before a major rebuild. Thoughts? I've owned the car less than a week. Trying to figure out the best first few mods, thinking oil cooler and then intake and maybe charge pipe, fmic, dp, then after these bolt ons getting a professional tune and going Cobb or jb4. Is meth a bad ideal on a higher mileage car? I know it reduces intake temps and fuel temps but will that stress the internals? Any constructive feed back is welcome.

Tune (jb4, Cobb) first. I think you'll be fine without the oil cooler if you are on top of you pm.

Why does everyone go tune first? These are all preset maps? Or are some of these stand alone unite that need to be dunno tuned? If it needs a dyno tune id rather wait, until all bolt ons are complete.

First identify all the oil leaks, I am sure it has some by now. Second do walnut blasting, i am sure the valves are filthy. I would probably also get a oil catch can.

Intercooler would be my first real mod, since the cars runs stupid high IAT's once you crank up the boost.

Thank you Kaane. That's good logical information. How much do you think Walnut blasting should run? Any idea of what type of price range? And yea I've heard about the intake temps and oil temps being way very high on these engines.

Also I've heard ditching the run flat tires is a good idea all around. Probably add this to the list of things to do intially.

i would do stage 0 , plugs, coils, etc.

then i would get a jb4...

then i would get kityless 3" downpipes help turbo run efficiently... use 02 sim to pass inspection...

i would pass on meth seem like every blown engine on the forums has meth as a common factor... run e85.

Go with the MHD flash tune. Cheaper and easier to install than the JB4.
COBB is a thing of the overpriced past!

Start by doing walnut blast, plugs, coils.

Get JB4 + charge pipe and a BMS data cable.
Make sure to log after each mod.

If all looks good, get catless VRSF DP + intercooler

If you have access to E85, get the fuel-it stage 2 kit.

Once you have finished all these steps and if you are still hungry for more power let me know

Note: I have a 114k miles 2007 335i FBO

Why tune first, it's the best power mod period and can be mild, medium or all out. All other mods are to support the aggressiveness of your tune (and are recommended highly), IMHO@!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree 100%
In this case though, OP should start by changing plugs, coils and doing the walnut blasting

No need for an oil cooler unless you are going to road track the car. For tune those are the two most popular now, but I would swing towards the JB4 due to price and features.

Start with a JB4/USB/DCI Combo and that should get you going. Will definitely give the car a nice boost in performance. Just make sure the spark plugs have been changed recently before putting on a tune.

Congrats on the car and hope you enjoy it for many more years!

Thank you guys for all the input. ANyone have an idea of what walnut blasting should cost and is this a process you'd recommend going to the stealership for? I live in Las Vegas, but I head out to cali fairly often and can make the road trip if it's much cheaper and more reputable. I've read a lot of DIY's but haven't got a dealer price yet... kinda scared.

No cobb/jb4. Get MHD flasher and never have to want anything else in the future for much less money too.

No DCI's. Get a high flowing stock replacement like K&N and save money.

Then get FMIC. VRSF makes a good one for the money everyone says.

After that, a good tune with some e85 will have you hurting FBO cars.

Saw an older thread showing everything from 250-800. Just depends on a private mechanic or shop vs dealer. Idk if that info is still accurate but I'd imagine it's about right.

Not trying to go off topic, but how important is it to log after each mod? I should probably do it when I get the chance I guess.. My mods are bms DCI, VRSF catless, jb4 map 5, x pipe (on e90),and valve always open. Basically coming out and saying it, how good is map 5 at autotuning? Again not trying to thread jack, sorry.

I work at an autozone warehouse and saw a million filters in there I could have used instead for cheaper.. But at least bms DCI are bad ass and unique.

With the exception of a few adapters you can get everything you need at Harbor freight and be sure you use coupons.. They always change and are readily available. Seems like a lot of dudes end up doing it themselves.. I also have a 106k mile 08 and am interested. The tools you buy can be used for other jobs as well so not a total loss if you only do it a couple times.

1st mod you should get is the search button mod. It allows you to find anything you could ever think of on this forum.

After that, tune, intake, fmic, dps....

I would start with PM first
Check for Oil leaks, walnut blast, Trans fluid, and get the (front, rear diffs) transfer case fluid checked/replaced... There's no such thing as lifetime fluid on these cars
Build a solid foundation to work on before going the mod route.
I have an 09 335xi with 116k miles, FBO since 35k and its solid. as long as you do the right maintenance it will treat you right till 200-250k miles
I usually pay $300 for a Walnut blast

This is what I run and even Autozone can't beat the quality/price. The FRAM Autozone sells has been known to cave in the filter housing.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080E55S0

Might as well get a cabin filter too.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DRHMMS

I just did my 2008's 45K maintenance which included plugs, BMW oil/filter, air filter, and cabin filter for under $200. That included the spark plug and oil filter tools.
