N54 Engine Malfunction (Off Gas, High RPM)

Car Info:
-335i xDrive
-6MT
-Turbos replaced under warranty ~5K miles ago

I noticed this problem occurs somewhat regularly. Typical situation below:

I'll be doing a 2nd or 3rd gear pull, nearly to the redline and then let off of the power. As the RPMs fall through around 5K or 6K I get an "engine malfunction" warning. It happens rarely as i try not to punish the engine like that too often. From time to time I just get carried away and forget to shift up.

The problem is solved by turning the car off and then turning it back on.

Anyone have a similar experience?

I have the same problem. Only codes I have gotten have been something about a turbo leak. I haven't actually had this happen in awhile, as I know how for to push the car before it does it. Although, for some reason it almost feels like it happens a lot easier when the car is really hot. Would like to know if there is any fix. My turbos were also replaced about 20k ago.

Could be many things. I'm leaning towards misfires especially since the problem goes away once u restart the car.

Either way it's going to be a guessing game until u read the codes.

Don't mean to bring back this old thread, but I was finally able to re-create the problem on the way back from DC today. I was having fun in a tunnel and ended up letting the car drop down in 3rd gear through most of the rev range. Just like that limp mode kicked in.

Luckily I have a COBB AP now so I pulled over and read the code. The code is P2A87 "Outlet-VANOS, mechanics". The AP info says that it's likely dirty VANOS solenoids, which is very possible since they have likely never been cleaned.

Like before, I just pulled over, restarted the engine and was back to full power. Just wanted to respond in case someone else can find my experience useful.
