Only thing the 135i has going for it is a slight weight advantage. Everything else the 335i is better

Honestly like I said in another thread, unless the 135 kills a 335 around a track, it's a complete failure. Why get the uglier car that only costs $4k less then? To be different?

Lurker here, prompted to first post. I ordered a 135i for my wife, and have been over here learning about the N54 among other things.

The more I learn about recent bimmers the more it occurs to me that BMW could've chosen to market the 135 differently than they have. I doubt it's materially cheaper to build a 135 than a 335, performance, weight etc are about the same. While they are stylistically different, (sleek vs. pugnacious) they are mechanically pretty identical.

I think they could've opted to market the 135 as a 335 variant, basically a short-wheelbase 335i. Dressed up with bonus features like the sexy brembos and M-bits, and absent the more 'entry' priced 128i, seems like they could've taken a page from the Ferrari playbook and called the one a "335i SWB"

Just another way to look at the contrast between the models!

The 135i has 6 pot Brembo front brakes. It's just geared for people who might want something a little sportier and don't need the extra room. They're targeting the 20 something demographic, single people or young couples who want something luxurious yet sporty.

C/D TEST RESULTS (for both cars):

Zero to 60 mph: 4.7 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 11.5 sec
Zero to 140 mph: 25.6 sec
Street start, 5–60 mph: 5.5 sec
Standing ¼-mile: 13.3 sec @ 106 mph

Braking, 70–0 mph: 157 ft

4 grand could be a lot to a new graduate or someone who just purchased their first home. I think the 335i is a much better looker than the 135i but beauty is really in the eye of the beholder, so just because you and I might not like the looks doesn't mean it won't sell.

I still find it strange BMW fans could say its ugly. Ugly is a pretty strong word. It still looks very BMW and has all the trademark features. Its not like its a totally different looking car than any other BMW.

The lower body lines on the side really ruin the car for me though. The 1 series addict guys call them love handles hehe.

I like them both. I think the 335 is a better looking car, but to be perfectly honest, I bought my 335 coupe because of the engine. If I were looking to purchase now, I'd probably go with the 135 just because I don't really need a car the size of the one I own at the present, its a touch lighter, and perhaps a touch sportier. That said, I LOVE my 335 and certainly wouldn't trade down for a 135.

Man those figures are all skewed. Not sure how many cars can hit 60 faster from a stop than from 5mph?

And the 0-100 times, the 135 is .6 s faster, but only .3s faster in the 1/4? Furthermore, it takes almost 2 seconds to accelerate an additional 6mph?

And the 335 is not "drag limited." It will do more than the what's on the speedo, that's why there is a governor.

The 135 is fast, but I'm still a die hard E92 loyalist.

I'm waiting to find this out. So many cars have a "Max speed 155mph - electronically limited" badge only for you to find out that they'll hit 155 only with a following wind downhill after 2 miles of foot to the floor stuff.

My 550 was stated to do 199 mph.
I've had it to a GPS verified 180 when the speedo was reading 200 + mph. I reckon with another mile to play with I might have got it to a true 187.5 mph - the magic 300 KPH.

If you mean dollar value we will need to wait until both 335 and 135 are on the used market at the same time. Then you can figure a true cost of ownership with money reclaimed from the used vehicle sale. Until then you wont know which is a better monetary value.

You will spend less for the 135 up front. If it depreciates more than a 335 you may find the value is better with the 335 over the 135. No one knows yet.

Thats seems like a overly incomplete sentence. What has value to you, might not be the same to another. They are both BMWs, one is performance orientated (per BMW) while one is centered around more luxurious amenities.

Sorry, this is a stupid question. The 135 is like 3k cheaper than a 335 sedan, for a car that is 10 inches shorter. The back seat of the 3 is already small enough, so you are basically getting a 2 seater with NO trunk, while saving only 150 lbs. Most americans are 150 lbs overweight, so the weight savings are really nothing. The 135, I must admit am intrigued by, but since every review says it has massive understeer, its not the poor man's M3 like we all wished.
