Which A/V Receiver should I go with

I think my receiver is taking a dump so I'm looking at a new one. Not going to crazy but budget is the 900 mark.

Here are the three I have it down to:

Yamaha RX-A840

Marantz SR 5010

Denon AVR-X2200W

Out of the 3 Im leaning towards the Yamaha I think. My current one is a Yamaha which I have had for 7 years. Worked great but once we moved, the new set up put it in a cramp spot and I think heat has taken a toll on it. Regardless the new set up will have plenty of breathing room for the receiver.

I haven't owned either Marantz or Denon so people with experience please share! If there is another you recommend please post up as well.

I don't really know much about any of those three specific models but have had a Denon 3805 for close to 10 years. All 3 brands are good so I'd focus mostly on functionality / connectivity / price if those were the three choices. I've been considering updating my Denon to something with AirPlay functionality but it still works like new and has been good to me so I haven't done it yet. FWIW, I'd probably consider Denon first and foremost if I decide to update.

I was going to vote Yamaha - I have had the a810 for a little over 5 years that I paired with my OPPO 103D.

No experience with Marantz here.

When i compared Denon against the other offerings about 5 years ago when i purchased it, i found that Denon produced a slightly warmer, rich sound over some others who produce a bit more of a tinny sound. But then, lots of people can't hear the difference. So it may not be an issue. I've got nothing bad to say about my experience with Denon over the last 8 years.

Denon and Marantz are one and the same, I have a Marantz sr6007 (iirc) and chose it because it had full pre outs, AirPlay, 12v trigger, support for the Marantz proprietary remote control system so I can control my 30 year old Marantz CD player from my iPhone, and AirPlay over cat5. From what I recall when buying it, the equivalent Denon lacked a few of these features. Couldn't be happier with it! It also supports DLNA streaming but I've not used it anywhere near as much as I was expecting.

Thumbs up

My vote goes to YAMAHA.

Over the years, I have owned @ 6 A/V receivers: Denon, Sony, Pioneer, JVC and two Yamaha. Including my current: AVENTAGE RX-A2020

You will be hard pressed to find an "overall better value and sound quality and reliability" than Yamaha receivers.

Here's mine...

I have a low-end Denon that I like. Since it's from 2009, it has 7.1 and forget ~80Wx7 for around $230. I'm pretty sure we can't buy anything with those specs for that price anymore. Never had any trouble.

My buddy bought a Denon in the $1100 price range at the same time, and it was toast right out of warranty. Shop told him to junk it, not worth fixing.

So if these things are disposable, I'd hate to spend a grand and just toss it out in a couple years.

Today's receivers seem so lightweight when compared to that of yesteryear. All made you know where....

I have Denon and Yamaha receivers in my house. Love both and both have just lasted and lasted. My dad raised me on Yamaha receivers, so when it came to spend a bit more for the living room setup, that's the way I went even after heavily comparing to another same spec Denon.

I have a Denon (can't remember the model number) right now, so I'd vote for the Denon.

I have a Marantz SR6008 that I've had for several years and it's been great. I have it powering my center and surrounds and use the pre-outs to a B&K 2ch amplifier for my Martin Logan ESL towers. Very happy with it.

i have that exact Denon AVR-X2200W in one of my rooms running some klipsch speakers and enjoy it.

not doing any technical comparisons or even reading the other choices i vote denon because i feel like we'll have a new internet bond.

i can imagine it now! "hey bud... how abut that denon?!" in like every other thread. we'll be true denon buds for life.

"DENON BUDDIES!" that's what i'll say. all. the. time.

You're likely to toss out receivers anyways due to being technologically obsolete. That's if you need to constantly keep up with the latest technology. If you want assurances that at least part of your investment isn't going to be worthless, going separates is the only way. If you decide you need to upgrade the surround processor, then that's the only thing you need to upgrade as amps don't really change once you get a good one. But the price of admission for separates is almost always higher than going with a receiver.

I am a bit bias since i always have Denon. I am still using the 3805 for music and 4308 for HT; i think it is time for an upgrade as well;-)
Anyhow, Denon and Marantz are under the same corporation with Marantz on the higher tier. Denon and Marantz AVR could be a little intimidated and confusing to setup. Not sure about Yamaha but i know their sounds are on the brighter side and a bit too artificial (IMHO).

Have you considered an NAD receiver?

I will check our NAD. THanks for the input.

Anyone have experience with the DTS-X sound yet? Some models support it and others don't. Looks like it came out this year. Just not sure if I should look at getting a receiver that does support it so that it's not out dated in near future.

Had Yamaha then a Denon, both are fantastic AVRs. I however upgraded to separates and for me at least, it made a world of difference. I got Emotiva UMC-1 and an XPA-7 to match for 7.1. Like everything else, once you get a taste for the better, you never want to go back. FYI, I listen to music but mostly do movies.

LOL. I went all the way to the crack with separates from the beginning. I have a Meridian 568.2MM after moving from a 2 channel system using a Bryston BP25 upgraded from an Adcom preamp. I'm looking to go to a Classe processor to replace the Meridian.

But I also have Emotiva stuff. I have an XPA-2 for the rear surrounds in my multi-channel system and another XPA-2 for the dedicated 2 channel system.

welp I ended up going with none of the above. Bestbuy had the Yamaha A1050 on sale so ended up going that route. Right now it will be a bit overkill with my set up but hopefully next year after our baby is born and we get past all those bills, I will get some proper surround sound speakers.
