Attention Oil Junkies

On side note. Ne1 know if it's ok to use non-synthetic oil if you're going to change your oil every 5k miles? |

why would you? Cheaper? With the temp fluctuations, synthetic gives better viscosity and proetection throughout seasonal temp variation... even in
Hot-lanta

You are correct. The reason why BMW uses synthetic and therefore recommends 15k oil changes is precisely due to the properties you mentioned. My arguement is that changing the oil on these cars every 3-5k miles negates the benefits of synthetic. I would even go so far to suggest that when the oil is changed that frequently (ie.3-5k miles) engine wear or lack thereof is exactly the same regardless of whether or not you use synthetic. If this is true, then why spend the $$ on synthetic if you're going to do more frequent changes. You could potentially cost yourself 2x the $ for no add'l benefit. I just don't know. |

I think using non-syn. oil would do more neg. that pos. even if u do change it more frequently. Just as it does damage to an engine such as the e90 if you use 87 octane instead of 93 octane. Plus its much cheaper! 15,000mi.=$80-$100 or 3,000mi.=$25-$30. Thats $125-$150 for regular oil changes, which makes synthetic oil changes much better.

Naw..I what I'm trying to say is the reason why you use synthetic is to get prolonged change intervals. You're spending more $ on oil but changing the oil less frequently. If you're going to change the oil more often (3-5k miles) you're not realizing the full benefit of using synthetic. Am I making sense? |

That's the thing..we just don't know. I believe BMW didn't switch to synthetic oil until they extended the change interval to 15k miles. I'd really like an Oil Guru to give us the lowdown. |
