Dyno Tests with data logs on JB4 / BMS backend flash

Not sure if anyone still cares about stock turbo numbers, but here you go!

Did some testing down at European Auto Source in Anaheim today. I've known Tom and Steve for over three years and they've always treated me like family; definitely some of the best dudes around! We've worked on countless projects together while I was on staff at European Car Magazine, and we built my last car together as well, a 600whp E46 M3. I'd really never bring my car anywhere else. EAS has handled the install of all my bushings, M3 arms, LSD, FMIC and so on with the 335... So, if you've been under a rock and are unaware of their awesome-ness, and you're in need of a competent shop owned by good dudes, go there! Now, onto the testing.

I really wanted to see where my car stood as it currently sits, as I'd like it to be running 100% before moving on to the next step with upgraded twins. Haven't decided which to go with yet, but hopefully that decision gets easier soon.

When I picked up the car two years ago, we hit it with a walnut blast and did a baseline run with the BMS DCI. It made an honest 282/302 with 76k on the clock.

[IMG][/IMG]

Immediately following that run, we installed some Macht Schnell downpipes and JB4.
On Map 1 we hit 367/376, and the curve was flat and broad.

Now, fast forward to present day and here's what's changed:
Turbos replaced under warranty at 80k due to wastegate rattle, they still rattle like hell, of course.
Forge FMIC w/ charge pipe and single BOV
Cobb exhaust
BMS Pump backend flash from the 7/1/15 update
JB4 firmware update to 31_7

I was curious how the car was performing on Map 1 and Map 2 on pump 91, as well as on Map 2 and 7 on a 30% e85 mix. From the seat, the car feels worlds better than it used to, and faster, too, but the curve is definitely not as pretty as it once was.

Screengrab from JB4 app:

Map 1, 91 octane: http://datazap.me/u/berno/run-1?log=0&data=1-3-4

Map 2, 91 octane: http://datazap.me/u/berno/run-3?log=0&data=1-4

Map 2, 91 octane & 30% e85: http://datazap.me/u/berno/run-6?log=0&data=1-4

Map 7, 91 octane & 30% e85 (car totally fell on its face here at high rpm, you could hear it too): http://datazap.me/u/berno/run-8?log=0&data=1-4-9-14-17

Added bonus if you've read all of this, here's a quick video testing out 2 Step at 5500rpm with some fire! Also a quick dyno pull video.

duty cycle looks great at high boost, can definitely tell those are fresh turbos! lol

your trims look good, maybe add a little more e85 and see if it fixes those top end timing pulls

yeah, I think I'll go for a stage 1 LPFP upgrade from Fuel-It and add more e85 next time, but since I'm not all that close to any stations, it's unfortunately a mostly pump gas car.

Hopefully inlets and some upgraded twins will bring me closer to 500 safely. So many options... VTT Stage 2, RB Stealth, Pure S2... killing me!

how many miles on your car? at 80k, I straight swapped my lpfp for the stg 2. Peace of mind, easier install, only do it once? Yes please.

You hit up Conserv Fuel on San Vincente in Brentwood? That's my spot.

I haven't been over there, I'll give it a go.

Just passed 95k yesterday. Had the LPFP replaced under warranty at 80k.

at 15k you should be good, but once these pumps get some miles on them they don't want to deal with anything over e30-40

I'm at 405/10 and that's the closest e85 pump I know, where do you go?

seems we are basically neighbors. As I said, I rarely fill up with e85. I did it at EAS because they had a drum and I used to fill up in Huntington Beach when I worked out that way.

Congrats! Great looking car and nice numbers! Have you considered Hexons? They seem to be very competitively priced especially with the promotion running. Also I am curious if you allowed map 7 to self tune before making the graphed pull.. I know on my car that it seems to be wonky until it is settled in from a few pulls. May be what you mentioned as falling on its face.. That or octNe limitations caused lower high RPM boost learning?

Nice work!

Map 7 doesn't 'self tune'

Only map 5 adapts the boost levels. Map 7 always targets 19.5psi mid range with a BEF.

I think he's referring to adaptations.

For example I did some pulls after a flash and the first few pulls I had some throttle closures but after it "adapted" they were sorted it out.

Ah, interesting point. I'm guessing there wasn't enough octane there, but no, I didn't let it adapt too much. Switched from map 2 to 7, this was the second Map 7 pull I believe.

Will continue to do some testing. I may make the jump to MHD paired with my JB4 soon. I'd love to get some inlets on the car to have a fully equipped stock turbo setup, but to be honest, the wastegate rattle is so bad that that's mostly the reason I'll be swapping. Of course I'll be happy with the added power and pushing the curve to the right a bit too.

I haven't looked into the Hexons that much. I'll take a peak.

Like I mentioned before, switching from map 2 to 7, there is no adaptation time. Like Jeff said, new flashes need adaptation.

On a side note, I'd be interested to see what difference the race flash makes for you. E35 Map 7 *should* work well with the race flash, though we can't say for sure without some logs. I dyno'd my xi on map 7 with the race flash at 391awhp.

Keep in mind, that was with stock dps and stock fmic. The turbos turned into hot air pumps past 5k since the iats were sky high due to poor ventilation and small fmic... it made peak power at 4700rpm I'm thinking I'd be 400awhp with a bigger fmic, just by looking at the dyno graph and log.

Yeah, I'm aware. Map 5 is the only one with variation. Same reason I switched and just went for it.

If it was quick and easy to switch flashes on the fly, I'd do so, in regards to the pump vs race flash. Another reason to switch to MHD I guess!

Again, this really is a pump gas car. 99% of the time I'm driving around shitty LA roads in annoying traffic, hitting it in 2nd gear when I can and getting sideways whenever there is room, safely. Some weekends I wake up early enough and hit the canyons, which only makes me want something smaller and lighter, like an M Coupe or Cayman.

Will continue to play around and log though and we'll see what happens in the next few months if I take the plunge on upgrading the turbos. First, it's time for adjustable droplinks up front, an M3 steering rack and some rear trailing arms.

Cold and rainy! better get some snow tires. If I still lived back east, I'd love to get an awesome winter setup and lift this thing. It'd be a fun snow car.

Maybe we can fill up on some e85 and go rip it around before you head out. Shoot me a PM.
